R1PPU's EJ9 Build Up

The snokey is waiting

:nono:

Had some time yesterday between work so sorted out the harness. My OCD was going crazy, so reset it so that the buckles lined up perfectly and the buckle is bang on centre. All buckles have been polished and everything is nicely clean....yes I know I need a girlfriend

And the excess harness straps were flapping about which was really annoying me. Sorted easily with a few cable ties.

OCD Has been satisfied

Just need a dc2 rear bench and re trimmed door cards man and the interior would be lovely :)

Thanks lads :) Interior is pretty much done now I think!

So some of you might remember that I mentioned that we found that the rear toe arms were seized when we did the alignment. After speaking to a mate, he sorted me out with some D2 ones for basically nothing :nice:

Spoke to Steve about it, and he had had the same issue on his coupe. Turns out the bolt that holds the toe arm into the chassis seizes on the collar of the bush. Access to the bolt is crap, and I was paranoid about pushing the sliding captive nut out its channel, so no impact guns (if you can fit one up there which is doubtful).

The solution was to burn out the bush, cut upwards and cut the head off the bolt, then wind it out as much as possible (this is with the collar still seized onto the bolt), then cut up again. Repeat until the bolt is out. Oh, and you have to drop the two bolts that hold the trailing arm, so that you can get the other bolt that holds the two arm in.

Then repeat for the other side

So...it would be hours outside in the freezing cold, rain to get this sorted. Until Dean offered to let us use his unit! Made such a difference having heat and light when the car was being such a pain. Really dont think we could've done it without doing it in the unit, took us 5 hours to do both sides and we were about to set the car on fire by the end of it. I really cant thank him enough! And Steve for volunteering to help!

Here's some pics of the day

Beast of a jack

Comparison

All done

Also the car reached a milestone a few weeks ago. Finally hit 100,000 miles! Feels weird, because I always said I'd sell it before it happened haha.

And thats all. New tyres after pay day. Nothing else planned for now, too busy with uni these days so car is being driven and not much else!

MASSIVE thanks to Steve and Dean, I wouldn't have been able to do the toe arms without them. Absolute legends :nice:

Looks like a ball ache mate. Did you do an alignment after fitting these?

Your very welcome my man :)

That's what I'm here for haha was a pain tho lol

We didn't man, thought I'd let the other guys go home because it was like 10 by the time we finished haha. We took some measurements of where the trailing arm was relative to the chassis and put it back together like that, so it's the same as what it was before. Going to set everything up properly when uni calms down a bit, or if I get lazy I'll just get Andrew to do it haha

Thanks again man! :D Haha yeah a bit! Just glad its done now. Hope the Mrs didn't mind :naughty:

whats the crack here with this vehicle? you keeping it to swap/whatever/makefast at a later date or planning to punt and get something else? neither is also a perfectly legitimate answer

Tbh, the plan's changed a few times. Was originally bought as a run around, but I've ended up rebushing the whole thing, and pretty much doing everything minus the engine. Was going to engine swap it, but to do it to a standard I'd be happy with, I'd be looking at about another 2k, which I cant justify.

So plan is to keep it for the rest of uni (2 years), get some bodywork bits that are annoying me sorted, and just enjoy it. Got a few other things that I want to do, but nothing serious (rear ARB and decat which are sitting in my shed). Track it and just enjoy it.

Then as long as I get a decent job after uni, I'll sell up and buy an S2000. Thats the plan...for now anyway haha.

Should probably update this... will get a proper post up soon, lets just say quite a bit has changed :)

PS still no engine swap though.

Right, time for an update...it's massive so good luck reading it haha.

When we were fitting the rear toe arms, we noticed that my tyres were starting to get close to the wear marker, so got another set of PS2's ordered. In the mean time went to Glasgow to see some friends, past a gritter and it didn't end well...

Luckily most of it washed off and didn't leave much damage.

Tyres arrived, found a new use for my brothers old room

Then my car got hit at work. Basically the whole drivers side of the car now has scrapes on it, which is really pissing me off. I'll get it sorted when I get the arches done. Worse thing about it is that it was hit by the guys in the shop next to us, and they refuse to do anything about it.

And how far away it was from the shop, still go hit though.

Went to get my tyres fitted, at the same time a wheel with a slight flat spot was mended and all of the wheels ended up getting a refurb.

New VS Old haha

The wheels my mate Graham let me borrow whilst mines were away.

Got the wheels back, sealed them using Poorboys Wheel Sealant to make cleaning easier because NS2's are a pain in the arse to clean haha.

TBH I wasn't happy with the new colour. They were too purple, nothing like the old blue. Fitted them anyway.

Then Steve brought his Coupe out for the summer, went for a Nando's.

Aaaaaaaaaand my alternator failed on the way home. Steve ferried me around all of the scrap yards in Central Scotland to try to find a replacement to get my car back on the road for Uni (including one place where we thought we'd get stabbed, I was genuinely scared), but all the alternators we found were seized.

Eventually got one off Civiclife, which my mate Joe helped me fit. Was a bit of a pain in the arse because of the driveshaft angle because of how low I am, but we just unbolted the coilovers from the strut tops, and I stood on the hub whilst he wiggled the alternator out. He's the guys who's gone full retard in this pic

Car all sorted and running again, decided to strip the interior to clean it. Bushell told me he was coming up to get some wheels for his (now old) EJ9, so fired my seat and harness back in and went to meet him and his Mrs

Then started doing my favourite job in the world...

And whilst this was happening, Dean brought me a little present...

Can really see the colour of the wheels here

Went back to Billy at CAS to get my midpipe sorted as I had a few issues, went up with Steve and he got his 5zigen system fitted too.

FINALLY got my mugen front lip back on, can't believe how much better it looks than the OEM one.

Popped up to Steve's work to fit a new clutch master cylinder to my car, my clutch felt horrible, this made a massive improvement.

My wheel bearings were also making a racket, so replaced them, fired in new ball joints and something John gave me too...

Painted

Then the change came. I was never fully happy with the wheels after the colour got done. Dean liked the colour and the wheels, I liked his Gram Lights so we came to a deal

Quick wheel change on my lunch break haha.

We went for some pics with Steve and John, came out quite well I think! :nice:

Then it was time to get the other hubs fitted. Pads and disks were replaced at the same time, Joe and John gave me a hand :)

Had a slight issue of the wheels trying to come off and kill me on the way to the Scotland Honda Day Meet, waiting for the guys to bring tools down so we could head up to Falkirk

John got this sick rolling shot of the car

One of my car at the meet (Stolen from Erin)

We noticed that one of the studs was spinning, went down to Johns after uni, stripped everything back and put a tack weld on the back of each stud, never had a problem since.

Noticed a horrible knocking noise coming from the front drivers side, and at this point I was ready to set fire to the car. Got it up on stands in the rain.

The ball joint nut had come loose. No idea how, because we tightened everything to FT when we fitted the hubs. I tightened it all back up, and put some loctite on it just to be safe, never had an issue since.

Steve, Dean and Myself were invited to be on the Civinfo stand at Knockhill Japfest, couldn't really say no
