B16B - turbo or JRSC?

Hi all,

I'm a long time lurker on here but decided it was time to make an account as I'm starting to think about boost. I realise there are a lot of threads already, most of which I've read. However, I'm looking for some more up to date opinions/experience etc.

My aims are for around 250bhp at the fly and of course, more torque. The car is used a lot on track and I'm after something to help pull it out of corners quicker and give it more edge on the straights.

The issue I have with the idea of boost is reliability. At the moment, the car is spot on - I've *touch wood* never had a single problem with it. I also want to keep my B16B as it seems like a strong engine, doesn't smoke etc - is this a mistake?

I've been offered a JRSC kit with the LHT cooling setup to help combat heatsoak. I had originally been looking at turbo setups, but this seems very tempting and is probably a simpler way of adding power? Would this kit be adequate for the power I'm aiming for? Does anyone have any experience of what sort of power I could expect from this kit?

I know its an age old question, but simply, is the B16B better off with a supercharger or turbocharger? What is the safest way of reaching what I'm after?

Cheers

I've just turbocharged my b16b, mines also a track car and drivability was a big factor for me. So I told the tuner I wanted it to be really progressive and drive it does stock but with more power. I ended up with this and it feels great and traction is good, even out of tight hairpins.

I have 3 different boost levels
0.4 bar = 250
0.5bar = 265ish
0.6 bar = 280

Do you did any brake mods ? do you have any problems braking? Do you got a oil cooler? :nerv:

Thats some nice numbers! :win:

Whats your budget?

The BHP you want is achievable with a turbo kit, but you'll need a lot of extra money to be safe at the track (bigger brakes, oil cooler kit, wideband, fully programmable ecu etc etc.)

I've got carbon Loraine rc6 pads and braided brake lines, that's all I've done on the braking side, stops me every time with no fade.
Got a large oil cooler but only a half rad(koyo) the oil hits 115-120 on track within 15mins on a hot day, the water hits 95c when on full throttle but always settles when you come off the throttle for a corner

Turbo all day. With the right setup you can get a really nice linear progressive power curve just like Jesse.

Hi All,

I just finished putting a turbo on my stock B16B as well, and I just love it, got a smooth power curve, with 250hp @0.4 boost, my tuner refused to increase the boost to 0.5 or 0.6 bar to keep it reliable as it is a daily driver.

I was wondering if it is ok to have the oil temp reach 115/120 as jesse888? I was told that temp shouldn't get above 100 degrees, is that true?

Worth noting my engine melted a piston at 0.45bar. Was a track car though and got the limiter in 5th every lap.
I've no doubt that the engine would have lasted fine if it was a daily driver.

I considered a JRSC kit couple years back, so much so I even bought a whole kit for around £1400. Turned out I wish I had done a bit more research first. They do seem like easy bolt on power, but in the end alot of faf and hassle In my opinion.

Seeing as you mentioned a LHT intercooled manifold with the kit at least you will be combating the main faults of the setup, but still the whole setup is quite limited to its potential gains over reliability. If your only after around 250hp then sure go for the JRSC with LHT. They are rare as hell and as cool as to boot. But if your a big fan of efficiency and suspect you might want more power in the future then for sure go Turbo instead.

I traded my b series JRSC kit for a complete MX5 1.6 with a JRSC kit on, its a ton of fun at approx 170hp . But even with that I already have parts waiting in the pipeline for a turbo setup on it instead, as potential gains on old Roots charger kits are just so limited and bloody expensive in comparison to turbo setups.

Hi Kieran

Just reading the thread.

You happen to know anyone selling jrsc kit ?

Ek4 sir

Do know of any myself. Fairly rare these days. Just have to keep an eye out. Quite common over in Us though.
