Jesse888 Forged/stroker turbo ek9

Trackday updates!!!
Brands hatch evening session with Gavin and his buddy in a ballistic 106.

I had just bought two 16x8 Advan RG from @SPek9 they came with used 225/45/16 dz03g so thought I'd give them a run out and see what all the 225 fuss is about.
Started the day with the 225s up front and my bald/knackered 195s that used to be on the front now on the rear.
This proved to be interesting on the sighting laps when I'm sideways at normal road traffic speeds!
Abit of testing later and I put the old rears on the back(more tread, better condition) and run them up till warm. The oversteer is much more controllable now and the car rotates like I've never felt before from a FWD.
here's a picture minus sideskirts while we where testing the water with the new setup

Ended up we where on full hard on the front dampers and 2nd from lowest(out of 5) on the rear to try and tame the back abit! I need to learn how to control it as I over correct ATM and it throws me offline(ESP at paddock hill bend)

Looks abit more racecar with the blue! Comes very close to the floor aswell on compression!

Gavin's b18c metro on ITBs
Build thread on this forum somewhere..

Said ballistic 106
C20let, Quaife ATB, Meth injection
420hp lol

Having fun chasing this guy about!

Cheeky video of the chase, I've never seen anything pull away from me this quickly before! Absolute weapon!

My favourite picture of the day, sitting pretty(ish) in the pits

So, the combined effect of the 225s and the splitter have completely transformed the car! I actually have more trouble keeping it from over steering than I do from understeer. Unfortunately my brakes finally gave up on me, long pedal which eventually ends up in locked rear wheels so I'm guessing I've managed to boil ATE superblue DOT4 fluid. Fluid is quite old now(atleast 18months-2years) and I do have the brakes smoking every session so pumping plenty of heat through my stock stoppers.
This put an end to any PB I was going to make! Having to brake a good 15-20metres early for paddock and early everywhere else really kills the advantage I gained in the corners and from turning the boost up.
Best lap was the very last lap(one of very few clean laps) 56.7
A whole 0.3 shy of my PB so happy with that considering.
Here's that lap

Not having the brake pedal under me really effects my confidence in the 1st 3rd of every corner. So it's really punishing me, that and not having got to grips with the new balance means that this is way off the pace it could be. Which is a good sign really.

Engine still going strong, that comes out in the next few weeks for the newly built forged block(after new rings arrive)
Replace brake fluid and hit the track at japfest2!

Nice! Car looks to be handling a lot better with this set up!

So would you recommend going wider on the front then?!

Yeah!
Assuming the difference I'm feeling isn't from the bald fronts to part worns the difference is huge. Like I said I'm having to catch the back all the time now!
In the video everytime you see me straighten the wheel mid corner Im correcting oversteer to give you an idea..

Car is looking really well with the blue wheels and its good to see that the front end grip has made a good improvement to the balance of the car and decreased under steer. Making small setup changes and getting used to the way the car behaves will definitely result in quicker lap times .

The over steer does take a bit of time to get used to and gain confidence in a FWD car but it will always be quicker when you master it... you just have to look at how much the drivers in BTCC fwd cars correct the over steer mid way through the corners and on corner exit they are always moving the wheel through the corners

BGW and that will sort you straight out !!

I won't lie, it has crossed my mind! It's still got loads of adjustment for more oversteer in the suspension so if a wing should prove too effective I can dial it back in with stiffer rear end or abit of toe out on the rear...

Very true.. I had to run full hard front and nearly full soft rear dampers to try and tame the over steer when running more grip up front on my DC2 but a BGW has completely changed that and I'm now stiffening up the rear to try and get the balance back

I'm full stiffness front and 1 from softest rear ATM.
Could do with abit less oversteer tbh but can't dial it out much more lol
The front tyres have definitely had the desired effect!

A good functional rear wing will sort that out.. also if you were to match the front compound it would also balance it out a fair amount which it did on my car when I fitted the new 205 wide DZ03's Dunlops on the rear.. or are you already running Dunlops on the rear as well?

195/50/15 dz03g on the rear aswell.
I think learning to control it will help no end.

Yes you can. Loosen the front off and stiffen the rear. Its all about balance.

Probably abit late to reply but I have 4 Wiseco ring packs (81.5mm) that I could send you over if you need them sooner, although probably take 2-3 days for them to reach you if I send today. Drop me a email if you want them(AP-Performance@hotmail.com) id need them replaced rather than selling to you buy I am in no immediate rush for them.

Thanks for the offer bud but I think mine will likely turn up maybe a day later anyway.

I'm under the impression a stiffer rear will induce more oversteer?

I used to think that years ago. I had a read about the net about suspension setup basics and worked from there.
It suited me having a harder rear suspension setup with a softer front

The stiffer the rear of the car in relation to the front will induce more oversteer then obviously if you stiffen the front compared to the rear you will induce more under steer

I guess this is why most basic mass produced coilovers come with softer rear springs compared to the front as its a safe enough setup because a car that tends to understeer is easier to control on the limit.

Even though the ek9 comes with progressive rear springs.. both the front and rear spring rates are the same when in compression, this is why some find that after fitting say, a set of coilovers with 10k front and 6k rear springs that their lap times may have actually been quicker with standard suspension.. because the balance with the standard setup will provide less understeer

So small update really.
Ordered some new brake fluid, I've always used ATE since I've been on track but after looking into the boiling points abit more decided I was going to venture out and try a new fluid.
Standard procedure seems to be motul 660 but I didn't fancy that either. Ended up with Gulf RF1000.
Basically a motul 660 equivalent, 325c boiling point which is pretty much the highest I can find. Way I see it is if in staying with oem calipers and discs I best make sure I got decent products stopping the car.
Had a quick look at the discs and pads and turns out they'll likely need replaced before the ring trip so that's more money I don't have.

Also noticed that the 225s rub the wheel arch on full lock, looks like I'll either have to put up with it or raise the car abit.

Thoroughly cleaned out my dc2 cylinder head today, brake cleaner shot through all the galleries and the vtec solenoid stripped, cleaned and rebuilt.
Hoping to start engine removal tomorrow after work and hopefully time it just right for when the piston rings arrive.

And this time no magic lucky sprinkle of swarf? ;-)

Video looks fast!

Haha nope no magic swarf this time.
Completely clean. Surprising how much oil is actually held in all the galleries etc.
Shooting the brake cleaner through them actually helped me better understand what's connected to what and where the oil travels.
