not been on here in a while! thought i would share some pics of a gearbox rebuild on a mates EK9 from last week, might just be me but always like to see pics of the guts of cars :nerv:

car sounded horrific on idle, let alone driving, clutch had recently been done and also didn't sound like a release bearing so time to take the box out and investigate

i've rebuilt a number of B series / K series boxes and seen an input bearing fail so figured same had happened here

car into garage and gearbox out

casing split

hmmmmmm, few balls missing there!

i ran out of gloves at the time......... but the magnet did a good job of picking up bits of the bearing race

gearbox thoroughly inspected and seems like we caught it in time and no major damage done

got a lend of an impact gun which made stripping the countershaft / diff SUPER easy. countershaft stripped

be rude just to chuck a new bearing in right? decided on an Mfactory 4.7 FD. building up the new countershaft

all together with new locknut

old ring gear off the diff

new mfactory piece fitted

old input bearing/seal removed and new seal/bearing fitted

and all assembled!

pic with my m3 after a wee test drive, box feels nice and tight, smooth as anything again! felt gooooooood to drive an ek9 again

now we just need to convince my other mate to sell him his spare cusco roll cage............. :naughty:

Mine was exactly the same, there were bits of the inner race/ball retainer that were crinkle cut from being wound through gears.

Nothing else was visibly damaged though

Love a gearbox rebuilt, thoroughly enjoyed doing mine. :)

Mines pretty upgraded. Spek put new bearings, lsd, gearset into it and Inhave replaced two of the gears with straight cut ones and fitted carbon fibre lined synchros.

Hi Steven, seeing that you know your B series boxes fairly well may I ask a question if I may....... :nerv:

I have a 98 spec S80 gearbox on my B16B engine and thinking of replacing 4th and 5th gears with the shorter 4th and 5th gears from an S4C gearbox.

Would I need any other parts apart from the main and counter gears or is it a straight swap?

Thanks

Yes of course in fact in my initial post I asked if I needed any other parts apart from the main and counter gears :))

Each "gear" consists of a main and counter gear :)

Thanks ;)

done something similar on my mates gearbox a few weeks ago, had a good box and a bad box with a kaaz lsd, so we swapped the lsd over and built one good box from the two, was good to get into the workings and see how it all works, alot easier than i was expecting too
