Rybeans street/track Ek4

This project still lives guys. Just have no computer at the moment and a few personal things have slowed me down, will update asap.

Engine is assembled and ready to go. What pics I do have to hand at the mo!

Llittle update of what I've been up to in the time I have. Prepared and sprayed my bay ready for its resident to return.

Little run down of what I do with most DiY paint jobs I do, very basic but I'm sitting at a computer for the first time in ages so going through my thread to add details. :p

  • Pull all wiring loom, fuse boxes etc out the way. Use some zip ties once everything is where you want it. Cover your delicate areas with some towels.
  • Basic prep job, sanding down all rust bubbles and scabs to bare metal with a wire brush attachment. Always take the 5p area of rusty/scab to a 50p size as its often spread further under the paint.
  • Wipe down with soapy water and some shop paper before using any sand paper, make sure everything is free from dirt and oil.
  • Work over the entire area you want to paint with 800 grit sandpaper with soapy water to remove clear coat and key the surface for new paint, no shiny bits! If you're brave and in a rush use 400 grit to get through the clear quicker and then run over it with 800grit to smooth it off, more prep at this stage will improve the finish.
  • Clean the area with panel prep, I used white spirit but always clean again afterwards with soapy water and rinse as white spirit leaves a residue and its killed some finishes more than once.
  • Work over the bare metal areas edges with 400 grit then 800 grit to smooth out the area so there are no drops/valleys in the paint that will show on the top coat.
  • More cleaning, soapy water and spirit combo, make sure its dry before painting. I use a heatgun when I'm not been precious to dry things quicker.
  • Primer time, mask up the entire area and cover your wiring, don't use cheap tape as it will bleed. Proper masking tape for paint finishes won't allow paint through. Same for your masking, I use bin bags when I have no proper paper, most people use newspaper but if you do make sure its two - three layers..
  • 2-3 coats of primer with 20 mins between coats, you can just prime the bare metal but I usually prime the entire panel.
  • If Im rushing I leave primer for a 3 or more hours and than lightly sand with some 800 grit to smooth out troublesome areas. Ideally leave any canned paint for 24 hours before flatting! Not 2k paint here as most canned paint is acrylic
  • Clean the area with water and wipe it down thoroughly.
  • Top coat time, 2-3 coats of colour starting slow, it wont look good on the first coat so don't get carried away with it, you don't want runs! If you do have runs, leave it dry and sand it out with some 800grit and water.
  • Repeat top coat process with your clear.

Allow to cure and get some 800-1200grit and smooth out your clear lightly with soapy water then follow up with some cutting compound to bring out that shine.

Extras -

If you do this and have some areas that were really rusty you can take down to bare metal and thoroughly clean and then put some light filler over to cover up the pitted look. Either that or some heavy build primer if its not too bad is good for covering up stuff.

Consider at this point asking a portable welder to come and weld up your holes, or if you can do it yourself cover up those holes you don't want/need if you're tucking the wires.

IMO the engine bay if you get the chance is a brilliant DiY job. The finish doesn't have to be perfect and it won't be in direct light :D

Prepped and fit my injectors and 4bar map sensor. Sadly the man who owns the shop I was working on my engine in has had a heart attack last month so things have slowed down as its been closed up. On top of that my dad hasn't been well due to some **** rear ending him resulting in a TBI so things haven't been good lately at all as I've had to stop work to care for him! Ive been without a computer for a month too, sorry on no updates. Not been my time of year at all.

I'm buying an engine stand and bringing the engine back home as I have some room now the GTR is in for some undersealing and under the arches stripped and painted. All thats left is fit the cylinder head and gearbox.

So here we are

Skunk2 Pro Series with an Port matched Alpha Throttle body, Speed factory 4 bar map sensor and ID1000cc Injectors with pigtails.

  • Remove 3 nuts holding the fuel rail onto the Intake and gently remove the fuel rail been careful as the injectors like to come with it. Pull the fuel pressure regulators vac hose off.
  • Try not to loose the injectors O rings as they are needed.
  • Remove the 2 screws holding the map sensor down on the Throttle Body and remove.

  • The ID1000cc Injectors and Speed Factory 4bar map sensor. Along with adapters for the injectors.

1975089_10153123699119859_2526252460443970914_n.jpg

  • Reverse removal process with new parts. Clean everything down. Pay attention to the O ring seats.

  • Fully stripping loom
  • Re-wrapping and braiding
  • Tucking/extending
  • Relocating battery to rear
  • Possible fuse box relocation to interior
Using 0.5mm and 1mm gauge single core wire for extension.

Going to be using this along with some shrink wrap/tape around connection ends

Starting with passenger side, removing Air Con wiring, extending alongside passenger inner wing and through fire wall.

Yeah boy! We are getting somewhere!

Yeah boy! We are getting somewhere!

Yeah man, things have settled into a nice flow at home now so I'm having the time to do it. This is progress of one day actually focussing on it. Though I'm taking the block for a final check over by another machinist firm as I'm not too happy with some bits. Block was apparently checked and fine but I've checked it for flat spots which it is okay on, but the surface is need of a better finish. So may be some more work needed to be done yet. Getting somewhere indeed man. Not cutting corners.

Quick little picture dump. I;ve been so busy I've not been able to update much at all.

Things have gone in a new direction, but it's still here and living.

Picked up a Gen 2 B16a and freshened her up ready to drop in.

So this is what's happened over the last few weekends.

Engine prepped, type r oil pump, water pump, belt/tensioner etc
All wired up, plumed in and dropped into the Ek.
Few teething issues, like needing a 3 bolt post mount etc but eventually got there.

She started first time on a JDM P30 Map. Just wired in my 0-1v output from my PLX wideband to the Hondata for narrowband using the d7/d14 pin on the harness. Wiring in the wideband signal today, just figuring it all out.

Been away awhile. Little update on how things ended up. Dyno day on the 14th of Sept and then track time ASAP!

@Rybean looks awesome a bro, done a great job of the engine bay

The cross over in the video sounds mental lol

Yeah, getting there, Dyno day soon them some valve guides/stem seals.

Been super quiet lately. So busy. Dyno day has been and gone.

Romain tuned her at surrey rolling road. She made 183hp and 125ftlb and keeps wanting to make more power so looking at type r head / cams. Silly me didn't get a picture of the graph as I was in a rush to get back as it was a 4 hour drive down south.

Losing a little power due to intake temps been at 42'C with the AEM v2 Ram so looking to do another cold air feed or get the extension but with it been winter not too bothered as of yet. She'll be closer the the 190hp mark once things are tweaked and sorted.

Hey again guys, feels like a introduction post!

So the little hatch is still very much alive and kicking. Life has been on hold for awhile and the hatch's journey has been slow. With the good weather coming around and life clearing up little by little, I can focus some more on the continuation of the "build" and sharing it here. Will go through the thread and try and fix images where I can, going to start using imgur.

Looking back through she has come a long way from when I get her completely original.

This is how she stands currently fellas, kind of a little update :)

Unfortunately the most exciting things to share at this point is me been curious and deciding to give the Nankang NS2R's a try using the 180 tread pattern. So treated her to some new boots for summer.

Back on boosted project soon or what?

Not quite yet, treating her to some trick new suspension that arrives tomorrow and that's about it...I'm doing things in a little drips atm.

Boost is tempting but actually pal, the only thing I've been tempted by is a h22 swap but for now my next "step" as it were is get her bodywork on point and treat her a little, then maybe a type r head. Starting small again.

H22 could be cool.
Trick new suspension sounds decent. It always starts small doesn't it lol

Rear suspension dropped today.

2-3 year old skunk2 LCA's greeted my like this so off they came, along with the 1 year old blueprint drop links that were seized to all hell, as expected though. Why they think the allen key head was a good idea is beyond me.

Been through some abuse and winters so guess they've held up okay but still.

Anyway, new bushes pressed in with my makeshift press tool.

Old bushed pressed out and new are in and ready to go.

Picked up a fresh set of Meister CRD+ so a little more after winter TLC and they'll go on.
