Soxturf"s EK9 Full Restoration

Bravo! I love these full restoration builds, very motivating. Look forward to seeing the progress.

Hi Guys,

My EK9 is currently in the process of having a full restoration done. It should be complete in the next 6-8 weeks so thought I might as well start this thread now to show its progress to date.

I bought the car 2 months after my 18th birthday in September 2008 and will own the car 15 years this September 2023 coming (I turn 33 this July 2023 ). I do not think I will ever sell the car and a few years ago I knew if I was going to hold on to it forever in good condition, then it was going to need this restoration at some point. The car was never my daily driver and never will be but just from working on it here and there etc, I knew once it was stripped, there would be a few surprises with rust etc.

As some of you may have seen in another thread, a couple of years ago, the car was having an issue with emissions for NCT, so I had it remapped by AP Performance (Vtec6000 on here) who also installed RDX 410cc OEM injectors into the car at the time. All engine internals are stock and this remapping restored the car to its original power and went straight through the NCT with no emissions issues. This ensured I could proceed with the restoration.

Anyway, below is some pictures I took before it was stripped.
That's a lot of rust. Has the car lived near the coast at some point? Well done for saving it

It has a Donegal Reg plate so may have lived near the coast there for a short period of time after being imported from Japan. Thank you, I know if I ever sold the car that I would just be trying to buy it back in the future for a price I could not afford, so restoring it was the only option haha :)

Some updated progress pics as the car continues to be rebuilt.

Front suspension now also in. Car still sitting on dc2 wheels but as I mentioned in original post, I have mint oem ek9 alloys for the car once restoration is complete. The car has had dc2 alloys since I bought it and I actually prefer how the car looks on the dc2 alloys but I want to bring the car back to looking stock, so once the original oem alloys are back on, I will get the dc2 alloys refurbished an possibly stick them on to car every now and then.

just came across this thread now, great to see an ek9 being restored to its former glory! MVB work looks top class, prices on their website seem reasonable given how good that looks.

Yeah MVB do amazing work. After seeing the work they had done on my mates skyline, I knew I could definitely trust them 100% with my EK9 and they are very good to deal with.

Are you going to do a refresh on the engine while its out ?

Great job....well done for bringing it back!
Look forward to further updates!

Nothing much as for now no. Just due to time really. Want to have at least some of the summer left by the time I get this car back on road. As I was saying in the original post, I updated the injectors and had it mapped restoring it to original power only recently but I do plan to do a full engine rebuild in the next 2 years or so. It just won't be right now unfortunately. When I am getting the engine rebuilt in the future, I will have any external engine parts which can be tidied up done then also, as this is probably one of the few items that will not look brand new at the end of this restoration, other than the redone rocker cover :) In this restoration I have replaced so many parts outside of the engine though and will put up a full list of everything once complete :)

Does anyone know what kind of adhesive should be used with some of the bungs/plugs in the ek9. For example the pics below are of both sides of one of bungs/plugs that goes in the boot-well. (It goes beside where the spare tires gets screwed into the boot floor). (Pics below are of the one that came out and will be replaced with new).

Are they not sealed with seam sealer? I can look at mine and report back.
