Sold my ep3 today and dont want to go back to oldschool EKs just yet ..
Am thinking off getting one off the above, seen a allright looking 172 with 204 bhp on the rolling road.

Can anyone give any advice, I know it's French and it isnt going to handle like the Ek9 or be as good to drive, look as nice etc but £2300 is my limit, cant snap up a Ek9 for under 4.5 k. And had three Hondas in a row now, just fancey a change for a little while,

Anyone had one before, how would it do up against a Ek4, cornering, fuel, insurance, id thought both the 172 and 182 will be better on the home run slightly?

my friend bought a pretty mint 172 cup for cheap. they are pretty fast and good handling but he said that they have a tendency to oversteer. not long after he said that he back was swinging left and right, right infront of me and into a wall. apart from that they are pretty decent cars and i would say a close european equivalent to the japanese ek9

Had a lowered 182 and it didn't oversteer once even on budget tyres...
Good cars
Easily as quick as the EP3
Although I doubt that one had 200 bhp
Guy on the clio forum had ITBs and it was only 205bhp
Has it got updated cams etc?

i have owned both and preferred the 182 :)

i think there great wee cars and fun to drive. in terms of power not far off an ek9 in my opinion and apart from the odd warning light (very common) i had no problems with mine :) would recommend trying one or you will never know

I have a 182 ff as my daily. I can't think of a better car for £3k tbh, relatively quick, superb handling, can get tons of **** in the back and 40mpg on a run easily. Just make sure you get one with the belts done.

in the last 1000 miles, its had a recon gearbox and brand new clutch kit, along with a full k-tec exhaust system around 100 miles ago.

engine spec:

3 angled valves,
piper retainers and springs,
cat cams 508 profiles,
matched inlet manifolds,
throttle body matched polished and stiffer spring fitted,
FSE pressure regulator mk1 fuel rail,
walbro fuel pump,
mk1 sender unit,
custom air intake and shiny bits heat wrapped manifold ,
Spax krypton springs and shocks (adjustable damping and height)
Ktec full exhaust (80 miles old)
Ktec inspired induction kit
b&m quickshift kit
Battery in boot
Rear strut brace and polybushed engine mounts.
Rota gt3 alloys w/ avons and yokos. v light wheels!

RR printout at 204 bhp. pulls very well indeed, ive owned numerous 172's and this is noticably stronger/faster.

does come with lots of recepts and paperwork to back this engine work up.

Bad points:

couple stonechips on front bumper
Bonnet is wrapped, White underneath
passenger seat wont recline or pull forward (broken cable)
No tax or mot
airbag and serv light on (common fault)
Rear bumper has a 3cm piece missing on passenger side
Side skirt missing

would make a very good track weapon/weekend toy, with very little changes if any, needed! it was used at donnington park last summer, where it perfomed perfectly.

I have weighed up the bad points already into my asking price, somebody will be getting a bargain!

this is the guys ad ^^

yeah id agree with everyone , the 182 is going to be better than the 172 , but a 172 with 204 bhp will be better than both :) but then down goes the fuel !

what is the serv light guys ?

service light - usually goes on sametime as airbag left or skid light not serious and no point getting it reset as it will onyl come back on

Are you planning on modifying it? If so they are very expensive to get power out of NA, if you go boost the gearbox will break lol.

Every car is exactly the same.
You won't find any performance cars that are cheap to get alot more power out of...
200bhp per ton is plenty in a clio
If say go for it mate
How much is it? If you havnt already said

I wouldn't say every car is exactly the same, the inlet setup on these cars is very restrictive and they never make book figures anyway, a 172 will be about 160bhp on the dyno...

Should corner better than standard EK4 if the suspension is set up right, not just bolted on and slammed.

With those mods it's going to be worse fuel economy than a EK4; unless you drive like a granny in the clio or were in Vtec 100% of the time in the civic.

Insurance wise, always hard to judge as can get some very competitive quotes on modded motors. But a Clio 172/182 is higher group to start with, so I'd suggest it's going to be a fair whack more than the EK would be.

They are great little cars, especially with the cup pack, certainly chuckable and a bunch of fun. Personally however I would be a bit wary of buying a modified french hatch with 'reasonable extensive' engine work that has warning lights on and no MOT. Or I'd at least want to know that I had enough money left to sort out whatever the potential issues may be.

Slightly off topic:

IF I had £2500 for a new motor and wanted to get out of the Honda scene for a bit, you can get a 2004/5 RX-8 with full service history, Bose sounds, leather interior, tax, mot, rwd and 230 bhp for £2-2.5k. For me this represents better value than a modded Clio, but it depends what you want out of the car.

Good luck with your purchase whatever you choose.

What's that got to do with anything. It's still the same in the fact that if he wants a massive power gain it would cost alot or money. Look how much has had to be spent to get it to 205 bhp.

As said mate for the price you can't go wrong. Even if you don't like it just sell it on or brake it for parts.
If nothing else you have tried a French car and can make a more informed decision next time round :)

Rx8 are good, but way to expensive to run for myself, tbh guys I regret selling the ep3, I really enjoyed it, nice sounding speakers, quick, amazing engine, 6 gears, nice to look at, reliable, list goes on, I just want something different for a little while until I can afford a newer ep3 or dc5, reakon the Clio cup was a good shout..
