Is there much involved in adding ABS to a car with no ABS? a friend of mine has a sir that came with no ABS and its very bad in the wet so he wants to add ABS

Driveshafts, wheel speed sensors and all wiring to all 4x wheels, abs relays, abs fusebox, abs modulator/pump, abs brake lines, abs control unit.. Theres a lot of stuff to add. If you have it all from a doner car then yup its doable, alot of work though... it wouldnt be worth the hassle in my opinion. Just buy some v.good tyres with directional tread and be careful

Yer I have no ABS an Toyo T1-r's and i find it hard to lock wheels in the dry, in the wet just dont snatch the brakes feed it in slowly.

Whenever i get a new car i tend to go to a road i know well when its late at night and test everything brakes being a part, they save your ass after all. Try braking from 50-60 as fast as you can see how much pedal you can give it before they lock then if you ever need to brake hard you have an idea of how far u can depress the pedal.

My mate wrote his car off 3 days after passing his test coz it was wet he had F*** all idea of how hard he could brake he locked up hit a parked saab and that was the end of that punto.

In general I find the brakes on my friends SIR a joke. My EK9 would pull up way before him wet or dry and its not cause he has bad tyres there all nearly new toyo's. Would it be worth while for him to do a 5stud conversion either from a EK9 or DC2 and not hook up the ABS? Surely it would improve his braking?

Yes, thats a common modification in my country, also remember, that your car comes factory balanced for the track, the eg6 hmmmm I don't think so :secret:

good tyres an good brake pads an it wont need abs

I guess you've never pushed a car hard enough in the rain....

face it.... the majority of us are probably pretty good drivers, but I'm almost certain none of us here are professionals (paid to drive - and no, delivering pizza or Chinese take-out doesn't count :p)

The saying about how ABS is invasive and doesn't allow for proper threshold braking is about as valid as breaking in a modern car with easy driving for 5000kms.

The Type-R ABS represented a forward step in enabling amateur and even professional racers the added advantage in the rain. Just looking at recent history will dictate its usefulness when Michael Galati was racing against Pierre Klenubing in the Speedvision World Challenge.

Galati's car was equipped with ABS while Pierre's car had NSX brakes and the rules required the deletion of ABS as a result.

These two were and still are exceptionally fast professionals and it is evident that ABS gives a marked advantage (safety net for the rest of us) in all circumstances....especially with how intelligent ABS has become today.

If you can tolerate the troubles - go and install the ABS :drive:

nope cos pushin a car hard in the rain is jus stupid even wit abs if the road surface is smooth enuf itll still lock up....most eg6's dont have abs an the brakes tend to be crap but thats all cos of the master cylinder if u change it for an ek9 or dc2 one an get good pads an tyres u wont need the abs or need to change to 5 stud...thats wat iv done on mine an find the brakes very good now.

pushing the car in the rain and wet is a great way to learn car control.

It's hardly stupid if done in the proper environment - road course/closed course.

I'm not doubting that your brakes are a lot better now, but they could be even better if you had ABS as well. ABS will not lock-up as you said it will on a smooth surface, bumpy surfaces might disrupt it for a split second but it'll still enable you to have a measure of control in steering away from trouble.

It sounds like you've never driven on snow or ice with ABS either...? I don't know every nuance related to this subject but having an Integra-R with ABS and an EH3 (SOHC VTEC 5th gen Civic) with a full 5 lug swap - I can confidently say even with the lighter weight of the Civic, the R will still out brake my Civic on any given track/condition.

ya its ok in a controlled enviroment like the track but on the road is stupid...were i live we're lucky if we get a bit of snow an ice never really gets that bad either more rain than anythin :(....im not sayin abs is crap or anythin but if ur able to handle ur car well ur not really gona need it at all only really use for it is really in the rain/wet an even wit out abs in the rain or dry i never lock up wen i push the car hard....its more down to driver an his/her ability
