Hey guys, Im in the process of buying a facelift Civic EJ9.. every model apart from the SE models(i previously had an SE, now written off) that ive seen does not have ABS..

I recently found a Civic Sport locally in my area and the Sport versions do not have ABS..

Does ABS really make that much of a difference? Im stuck in two minds and I dont know weather to go for the Sport model or wait until I come across another SE model just for the ABS.. ive had no car for a month and a bit now and i might just be getting impatient, but im trying to prevent impatience get in the way of logic..

Can I have some advice here please? :please:

I would defiantly pick abs over non abs , with abs my 9 stops hella fast :nice: ,

ABS has proven to be a saviour in many occasions. Unless it`s a track car ABS would be a must for me choosing a car. Especially in the UK were it`s wet most time of the year.

Abs I good to have..but my gf has a light weight model ej9 and it doesn't have it saves abit of weight..lol..but I would rather have it tbh..

I wouldn't buy a car with out abs, i was in a car crash a few years ago in a friends mg zr that didn't have it. People will say just pump the brake pedal, try remembering to do that when youre about to have an accident.

I would definitely pick ABS over non ABS too but i was just getting impatient.. not having a car is effecting my day to day life, commuting to uni etc but i guess ill be patient and see if i can find an SE model during the 3 week break i have..

It's not like a NON-ABS car is some sort death-trap, I would be choosing a car over something much more important (IMO) like rust, miles or condition particularly on a 12+ year old car. And at the the end up the day, it's 90bhp 1.4. But guess alot of people have different views and experiences and I can appreciate that :nice:

People think nowadays because a car has ABS, I will drive like plank, you can still have an accident and also, main thing about them is they are a pain in the arse when they go wrong, do a wheel bearing change or take the hub out and don't put them back properly or a bit of dirt gets in them, they go wrong and cause issues,

My EJ9 had ABS which I then took out because it started kicking back on my brake pedal when I came to a stop, it all happened after a wheel bearing change, I replaced ABS sensors, replaced the pump, got new ABS rings and even did a diagnostic test... nothing, wasted £150 on trying to fix it,

Don't get me wrong, ABS is great when it works but they are soo easy to mess up, I feel the brake feel is better too without ABS.

I wouldn't let it put me off. It's definitely a preference to have but I'd no way think of it as an essential.

Thank you, im sure its not a death trap but im planning to keep this car for a long time and it'll be like my little build etc so im trying to make sure it has every possible extra that i can :) I mean dont get me wrong, ABS is definitely NOT the greatest live saver, sure it can avoid quite alot of them, but for example.. my old EJ9 i lost because a lorry on the 3rd lane changed lanes and hit my on my rear right side and I spun out at 60mph.. ABS or NON abs car, it wouldnt have made a difference there, sometimes it doesnt matter how careful you are, some douche, excuse my language, is just uncareful and their mistake could cost your life!

Yeah I heard ABS system were a real pain to fix when they go wrong :( Im sorry to hear your money has gone to waste! I will drive exactly the same way with both an ABS and non ABS car, im always trying to be as careful as I can.. I dont tailgate just because i trust an ABS system.. just peace of mind i guess?

Yeah i agree with this, preference is the best way to put it i guess..

Just remember, tyres stop a car too, not just the brakes so get decent rubber.

I crashed a car with no ABS last week. Try remembering to pump the pedal when you've got to come to a halt in a few meters, you panic and simply do not have time. I would have still twatted the car in front if I had it, but I would have been going a lot slower and might have gotten away with a bruised bumper, not two written off cars. :(

All else being equal, ABS for a road car, every time.

Of course it is better but as said I wouldn't let it be the make or break of buying a car. I there was a choice of two cars one with and one without I wouldn't necessarily bit ABS all depends of the condition of the car is more important IMO. Especially when the car your goin to be buying is goin to be coming up for 13years old at least so need to make sure all is fine mechanically and rust wise first :nice:

Sorry about to hear about your experience man! I know exactly what you went through :\ but yeah, i guess this is also a good example of ABS vs no ABS!
