Advanced Driving Techniques

i never left foot brake but i constantly heel tow downshift

easier on the gearbox

It is when you allow yourself to slow down just by using the engine brake from downshifting. very useful especially in time attacks!
That's engine braking you just described.
Trail braking is when you continue to brake after the corner entry, and trail off the brakes as you turn more towards the apex. It allows you to brake later on the straight than someone who is doing all the braking before the turn. Like left foot braking, it can be used to help point the car because it it puts more weight on the front tires.

i can do it:).......... some times (heel toe) its to match the revs so there is less engine braking right? like most people have said in a spirited drive it is alot easyer than on track every time im on trxk i forget because im so nervous lol again i ware skate shoes aswell i havnt tryed it in my omp race boots for the reason above so i dont know what they are like for it
but damb it feels qick when you get it right especialy if you stay in vtec :D

if you say that trail braking and left foot braking are different then you are they performed...I mean whats the movement of the feet in trail braking?

its d same as left foot right? just you point the car early in the corner right?

I been left foot braking and heel to toeing since the very first day I got my car :D
It's easier that way I think as when you get used to braking with your right foot for a long period of time it's harder for you to accept the left foot doing the work.

Heel to toe is to keep car balanced and preserve your drivetrain.
It's also a way to make sure you are in the optimal (perfect gear) for corner duration and defo on the exit. Rev match & braking at the same time as mentioned earlier.

Left foot braking is.... hmmm... During a corner have you ever wanted to full throttle but worried that you would lose grip in the driven wheels? (Us being FF it's more than likely that we have)

Well, accelerating will put the weight towards the back of the car and braking brings it to the front. Depending on how much pressure you place onto the brake with your left foot while accelerating you can accelerate through the corner and still be in neutral balance (maintaining grip)

*Disclaimer!!! Please practice your left foot braking on a quiet straight road before applying it to the corners as if performed wrongly you will be effectively be doing a lift off oversteer!!!*

Best thing is with practice going full throttle and using your left foot to adjust your speed. Then on corner exit you have this huge surge of built up energy (kinetic) to launch you off. Imagine pushing against something then suddenly that something gets removed.

Ideally, you want to practice all this stuff with a car that is non abs before transferring to an ABS car.

I had a yaris T sport as my first car :D

I hope that i've worded it so it's understandable. I just thought I woud add my 2ps worth.

Thanks for reading.

iv also been using heel & toe technique since i got my first car EK3...now in the ek9, which wasnt long ago...1year ago perhaps?... at 1st found it difficult..couldnt get the timing right...

after few weeks works perfectly......from watching the hot machine VCD and japanese touge VCD's that i purchased while i was in HONG KONG....pretty much learned everything from watching these.... seen pretty much all the volumes lol... helped a great deal ^^

now everyday when driving to work or just to uni....i keep doing heel and toe..just comes naturally...can be annoying when im trying to save petrol tho!

Yes I found timing a little weird on Hondas as they rev so bloody high, you have to give it that extra bit more kick to match the revs :D

Ive used heel toe technique in many cars and most are easy to master but I definitely agree that the ek9 is set up perfect for it.

lift off oversteer is so much fun. Easy to do and does exactly what it says on the tin, just remember to get back on gas pretty quickly or youll spin.

left foot braking is the latest ive been trying. Really difficult but when done correctly ( correct modulation of brake and accelerator at same time) allows you to steer the car like a rudder. Ive only managed this a couple of times but its really impressive. Also this type of car control can help you in many dangerous situations.

Heel and toe will make you much quicker in a race/ competition scenario, it allows you to down shift so much faster and smoother making you able to brake later whilst keeping the car balanced, once you master it it will be like second nature.

The same goes left foot braking but this would be used more on the track unless you drive every were like a nutter!

The best driving technique that i can think of is being relaxed and confident but not to confident, also with fwd if you experience lift off over steer just steer were you want to go and get on the throttle, you see so many people who panic and get all crossed up when theres no need to lol

i've been having some issues with a genuine heel-toe technique. i have been using the width of my foot to make sure i can use that as a sort of brake / throttle technique. Been using left foot braking for a while now in fast and normal situations and i dare to say that's something i can control well enough. it is very fun to try but make sure when you do that you do it in either a true safe environment like the track or a place on the street where you cannot / will not be a bother to anyone!

Make sure your big toe is on right hand side of brake pedal, then rotate foot 90 degrees.
its easier if the engine is revving higher.

I have never needed to left foot brake on the road.
I do it in my daily but then its an auto....... I don't need to do it for the reasons you do it out on track.

Who plays or played GRAN TURISMO knows the feeling of Left foot braking... it allows you to go inside corners smooth and using well the weight distribution :)

;)

I LOVE go karting.. where you need to be smooTH

Maybe the ultimate driving skill is this. You really need to have a conection between your senses and the grip

Who remembers Senna's driving a go kart in a black suit and driving the Lotus like dancing?
