Hi Guys,

does anyone know the honing specs for P73 piston rings and when I need to look at oversize pistons instead of just a pure hone + rings.

I know my engine builder should know this but I just like to be clued up.

Thanks :nice:

Yeah 280 grit finish with a 60° cross hatch finish. Who's doing the work mate ? Make sure they bolt all the mains in place and use a deck plate if possible.

Ideal thanks mate, local company called Barum Engineering.

What are the tolerances of a pure re-hone (i.e. when is just a hone still an option instead of going oversize).

Just want to know what affects this as the bores are pretty glazed...

I ain't got the spec's around me at the moment but i can tell you now that your bores won't be true so whilst your at this stage get it rebored. You'll get a better ring seal this way.

Cool thanks mate, so I'm def looking at oversize pistons ideally then.

definitely, always better to oversize if your in any doubt as to the original bores servicability, especially if its been suffering from heavy oil consumption,

If you want a good & cheap replacement set of pistons and rings take a look on ebay for a set of Nippon pistons. You can't go wrong with them.

I was looking at the Spoon kit on SpoonSportsEurope... £333 atm with rings

Complete waist of money like most of Spoons stuff lol. Theres no need to spend all that on a re-boxed set of OEM pistons. You'll be fine with Nippon. Put it this way, Blinx on here is running them in his 333whp turbo B16 with no problem. I'v also run them in the past with no problem.

So glad you asked this. As i think i have the same problem. I was just going to pull the head off and wizz a 3 leg honer on a drill down each bore to rough them up a bit then fit new rings. Ant try bedding them in again.

Seems it is a bit more hastle than i thought. Dont think i will bother. Im planning a B20 build for next year anyway. No harm just running as is topping up with oil every 2 weeks.

This reminds me why i joined this forum. Even throughout the useless repeated dribble questions posted every day, there is still guys who post on here that know there stuff. :nice:

Those hones are absolute crap mate and should never be used in our engines. If you want to go down that road and want a quick and easy temporary fix then buy yourself a "Flex Hone" . There a great piece of kit and work really well in our engines. Have a little seach on google for some info. PM me if you ever want the phone number of the place what sells them over here.

As a small update went to see my engine builder at lunch time with the block, he did a visual inspection and is fairly confident it only needs to be honed.

He is going to check everything over properly and wants me to bring in the pistons so he can double check it's within tolerances, hopefully save myself some money but if it needs to be over bored i'll get it done.

We checked the bearings too and there's signs of scoring so those will need doing too... :(

Nice metal 'graphite' like gunge

Where does he think all the metal on the sumo plug has come from ? You'll be beter off reboring over honing as the cylinder's will be out of round. Its up to you though, you've come this far at the end of the day...

How does the crank look ? Is it scored ?

feck me mate that rod bearng is not looking good, which engine is this? the spoon stroker lump?

Not up for messing around now so if it needs boring it will be bored... Daz at DNR said the bores are pretty strong and should be good for a hone, I have specs from him now which I'll pass on to the engineer. If they are out of those specs oversize pistons will be going in.

Will let the engineer look at all other components and will post up his findings :nice:

Crank is mint, no scoring at all.

LOL I know, yeh it's spoon stroker lump. I ended up getting scammed with the new engine which I'll explain in a few weeks when its all sorted. :(

fookin ell sad times, i hope you get out the other side of it with an awesome engine,,

good times for a couple ek9 owners this week at least with Steve & Ians Dyno tunes, keep an eye on their threads watch ians vids to keep you motivated that you will get there!!

Ok cool mate you do that. What are the out of round spec's ?

It looks like the bearings have done there job properly then and saved the crank. This is one of the reasons that Honda OEM bearings are the best bearings out there.

O yeah, can you find out where those metal shaving come from ? Has you pump failed ? Did you have low oil pressure ?

Yeh mate, honda bearings saved the day :)

Oil pressure was still good, no light. Will try to find out from the builder.
Should be dropping everything off to him tomorrow.

If you had ACL race in there you would of been fuked for sure.

Yeh let me know...
