Civic EJ6 Coupe 98, Civic EK4 VTI 99
I had a thread on here before (Corey’s SSB EK4 VTI), for my old EK4 which I bought, drove for a year and then took off the road for a full resto. During the space of 6-8 months I stripped the car to pieces in my workshop at home. I got robbed :angry2: so I started renting a proper unit, then I managed to get things started properly.

As I started replacing the rear arches, I just kept find more and more rust. Some in areas I wasn’t comfortable in doing myself (I am a fabricator by trade), also in a financial position to fork out a tonne of money to have it all done professionally.

So I ended up doing a complete shell swap, I picked up a solid rolling shell, cheap! I had always wanted one of these. Civic EJ6 ‘98 (prefacelift) Coupe. Originally a D16Y7
1.6 SOHC D-series.

Basically, I had loads to do so I stripped the EK4 VTI down to absolutely nothing apart from the shell on the floor with its interior loom and glass. Sold everything I didn’t need for the coupe which gave me the funds for new parts for the new shell.

I got this shell in September, ive stripped the full interior, dash, hubs, everything off of it and swapped everything over from the EK4 and while I was at it, I got rid of things I didn’t want. I was so keen to get started I forgot to start a thread but I always document what I do so will just start uploading the stages.

Cheers, here’s a few photos of the old VTI. RIP :nono:

The new shell when I first got it. I put it straight on the ramp next door and swapped all of the VTI hubs over, subframe and all suspension components. I fitted brand new M2 Motorsport front adj. camber arms, cyberspeed rear camber arms, my Tein Advance Pro coilovers along with the front arms etc from my EK4 as they were in better condition and had new bushes already.

Stripped everything off, check for any rust which I found one 5p patch in one of the front arches which is water trap from the arch liner (swear they always go here), so I sorted that and now this car is literally rust free. It’s amazing, every bolt I take out of the engine bay or anywhere else on the car is literally just like brand new?! So weird. No rust of corrosion what so ever.

Undersealed all 4 arches, slightly rolled the rears and etch primered aswell. Undersealed all the back end, this will be visible as I have a half cut rear bumper.

The front headlight loom etc has already been tucked before but I need to tidy this up and water seal it with heatshrink and tie it all up tight rather than hanging down.

Complete interior swap finished. Got rid of all of the grey grandad plastics and dash for my nice black VTI interior. Dash was a nightmare as I haven’t swapped or removed one before, I won’t be doing it again though :nono::nice: haha.

I have removed the complete sunroof, drains and wiring etc. Weighed loads!! I have riveted and sealed a aluminium bung in place.

While I had the dash out I stripped out the A/C box so it’s empty inside. My old EK4 had all of the electric goodies etc so I stripped the A/C out and I have also stripped the power steering aswell as the sunroof. But I decided to keep the electric windows.

My interior set up is the following.

Corbeau Clubsport XL
Nardi 330mm Mid, Leather Wheel.
HKB Japan boss
Tegiwa Low Mount Bucket Seat Rail
Tegiwa Race Spec Extended Short Shifter
EK9 Cup Holder unit
Skunk2 Weighted Gearknob
Broadway Ext. Mirror

I will be buying a roll cage for this next winter

Engine bay repainted in satin black. Will look nice with the bits I have for the engine bay as I want the nice, new looking engine to stand out. And i didn’t want a fancy colour as it’s not a show car :))

Prepped, sanded and primered.

I now have picked up my new bonnet, front bumper, SiR grill, Mugen splitter, carbon mirrors and a few other little bits.

Now I’ve started on the engine. Got the box split off and the engine up on the stand. I’ve stripped it down, spend a day with gunk cleaner wire brushing and trying to get 20 years worth of sh*t off. (It was horrible!). Looks brilliant now but ignore the rocker cover as I wanted to repaint it anyway, so I just got some silver paint on it.

I’ve since also painted all the small bits, painted both sides of the engine and have started to re-fit pipes etc.

Will be painting rocker cover next once I’ve done my valve clearances and fitted the new cambelt kit.

Nice one mate, can’t wait to get mine out the garage and back on track :)

Nice one mate, can’t wait to get mine out the garage and back on track :)

It’s been a year and a half since I’ve driven my car, my daily/family car Audi A4 Estate isn’t doing it for me haha.

I’m not too far from Castle Combe which is my local track, I’d like to make a trip to some others like Cadwell and Santa Pod though this year. Travel up to 6two1 meet etc. And Honda Mimms. Have never been before!

Stripped, cleaned and painted my inlet manifold and throttle body today. Can’t beleive how amazing it’s all come up, what a transformation. Fitted my new AEM High Flow Fuel Rail and fitted everything to my TB and inlet. I can’t fit the TB to the inlet as my carb cleaner hasn’t turned up yet as I need to clean it all out and maybe do a little bit of polishing.

All my service items and bits I need for my engine turned up today, the one thing I needed today was the inlet mani gasket and it was wrong :angry2: . It’s all ready to be fitted ones I’ve carb cleaned them.

Cars now on stands, now I can get a few bits done before the engine gets dropped in for the first time.

Fit braided HEL lines all round.
Fit 282mm calipers (once painted)
Underseal rear arches
Fit EK9 ARB, Blackworks LCA’s, drop links and ASR brace
Remove front lower arms, fit new bottom ball joints
Fit new track rod ends
Fit new wheels and exhaust system so I can fabricate it longer to fit the coupe

Make sure you get a rear bumper bar bolted on because only a tip on the rear will leave major damage,
Ask how I know!
Safe to say I have one fitted that I got of a 4 door civic.
Nice work too , love a clean black prefacelift coupe.
So nice when done right .

Will be updating tomorrow night. I’ve had about 15 parcels come through this week and now I’ve officially got everything I need to finish the car (apart from a harness).

Going to Honda tomorrow morning to pick up my inlet gasket as I had a nightmare finding one! Which has been holding me back.

I’ll defintely look into it. Thanks

Had to make a trip to Honda this morning to pick up my inlet mani gasket, bought a couple online elsewhere and they weren’t right (annoying). I assumed they’d be more expensive genuine but it was cheaper anyway!

I used Wynn’s carb cleaner and cleaned the throttle body and inlet (worked amazing instantly!) greased the throttle pulley and spring and fitted it to the engine. Finally seeing progress after months of sh*t lol.

My friend sandblasted all my torque mounts which I have now painted satin black (forgot to take a photo when dry) they look so nice.

Re-painting my rocker again because I might aswell if everything on the engine is nice and fresh. Wrinkle black again

Also test fitted my Mugen splitter, which I’m super happy with. Cut a hole and test fitted the duct. Just need to fit canards and finish making an aero splitter for the front. Once all the front end is on once it’s been colour coded black.

Working on the car on Sunday. Have now sent off the bonnet and bumper which are being wrapped gloss black at the moment.

Paint has now dried and the torque mounts and they look so good.

Hoping to get the rocker cover repainted on Sunday, valve clearances, cambelt kit fitted and the rest of the engine bits bolted back on.

Then I’ll get the box painted and put back together. Then once it’s dried, next time I go to my workshop I’ll get the new clutch and flywheel on and then into the new shell!!
