OK so I bought a 1998 Civic 1.6 VTi (EK4) ... speedo wasn't working. After checking all connections etc the culprit is usually the VSS. So I phoned a local parts dealer and he said he had on and charged me £10.. sweet deal. Here's the install:

Here are the tool I used:

VSS to install:

Time to locate the VSS. It is a sensor that is attached in on the top of the gearbox. Here is where you should be looking:

As we will be dealing with an electrical component. For safety reason you should disconnect the negative terminal on your battery:

Look at the connector on the top of your new VSS to help you to know what to look for:

The view down behind the intake should reveal something similar to this:

As you can see the intake is in our way. So time to remove it. I didn't take photos of how to remove it as it should be pretty simple. You need to use your flat head screwdriver and loosed two of the metal clips. Then just gently pull the intake away from each part in turn. Here are the clips I removed:

Sit the intake to one side:

Pointless picture I know haha.

No intake:

Now you have a better view of the VSS and more room to access it:

The VSS is held in place by a 10mm bolt. I could get a photo of this and it was too far down. Reach your hand in and feel for it. The hardest part of this install is getting access to the bolt. Remove the connector from the top of the VSS and move it to one side. You need to push a clip to take the connector off.

Once you get the bolt take out, just pull lightly upwards on the VSS and it should come out easily.

Old VSS gone:

Time to install the new VSS. Unfortunatly this is where I will have to stop the DIY as comparing the the two sensors I realised the part I bought was the wrong one. DOH! So it will be next week before I find a proper VSS and install it. I'm sure this part is simple, a bit fiddly. You have done all the hard work by removing it. So go get 'em and install that VSS.

Hope this helps a lot of people as when I searched for information on broken Civic speedometers I found lot of different answers and people saying replace the VSS but no information on how or where to find / access it etc.

Awesome guide, thanks for sharing mate! +rep for you!

Very good write up. Came in handy today as mine is giving trouble at the minute

As an addition to this thread (I also found it a useful, but incomplete reference in solving my speedo issues)

If you wish to replace the speed sensor in your EK9 you can use any honda speed sensor that has the correct Denso sensor body but probably the wrong drive gear. To change the drive gear/shaft you simply remove the R clip from the sensor body and the driveshaft will drop out, swap these over with your old drive gear and shaft and you have converted the sensor to suit your EK9. For example I used this part No. - 78410-S04-901 as the donor for the sensor portion and after swapping the gear and shaft assembly it works fine in my EK9 Type R.

I also found that my speedo problem was actually caused by a rotten pin in the harness side of the connector and my speedo sensor was only partly at fault (it had an intermittent flicker) to replace the connector I believe you can use a replacement connector from a Honda CBR600 motorcycle speed sensor. You will need the female half of the connector.

Hope that helps someone as I've been scratching round the net for a few days to piece the info together.

oh and that part number is available new for around £55 ... rather cheaper than the £230 it will cost to get the 'genuine' article complete with correct drive gear.

Going to be giving this a whirl as mine has decided to **** itself. Neat guide, thanks for sharing.

Mike Bike...just put the part number 78410-S04-901 into the lings Honda parts site and it came up with the speed sensor assembly and gave a price of £234.76 ?

I got mine (that part number) from Ebay for £55 ... I said the genuine Honda prices are expensive

make sure you check the connector though, they rot out. If the connector is full of green gunk it's probably that at fault, give the wires a tug too, if the pins are shot they will most likely pull out. You can get the correct connector (as above) or small crimp on terminals fit as temp fix.
