EK3 VTEC-E vs Jazz MPG

Driving an EK3 now as daily. I want to do some mods at least to make it a bit more pleasant to drive in (last 2 months I've driven 5000 miles in it with no aircon, sunroof or whatever). So I could look into investing some money into my EK3 as there is not much interesting within my budget concerning mpg. Or so I thought, it seems like the Jazz 1.4 I-DSI cars have around the same mpg! It's a nicer car to be in as a daily I think, especially with aircon, nicer interior, more space etc. But I wouldn't really want to lose much on mpg. So I am wondering how is a Jazz 1.4 I-DSI compared to an EK3 in terms of MPG? Any other considerations?

My cousin bought one and she is getting 45+ mpg.my old ek3 Eco you couldn't carry fuel to it the b16 was easier on juice tbh. Go for a jazz nicer to drive not the nicest looking car but hey it's to go to A and B

B16? EK3 has a D-series VTEC-E engine, are we talking about the same?

Ok, that's weird...I have had a B18C, B16A, D16Z6 and D15z6 (1.5 VTEC-E) and the last one easily is much more economical than any of the others. With the VTEC-E I can get up to 56 mpg (UK gallons). I'm wondering if the Jazz will do the same on the highway driving 60-75mph.

My old EK3 was uber economical, my EK9 is nowhere near as good. You must have had some bad motor chrissy!

ek3 is probably one of the most economical (if not the most) that honda has ever made..
You can't go wrong with this engine.. Maybe make it more fun to drive and that would be it. Honda fits would be around 5-6lt/100 easily.

Love my EK3! Have a facelift 3dr model completely stock.

Realistically I get at least 42mpg, 90% town and city driving.

£20 a week gets me 125 miles, That's honest figures. Friends always ask why I don't get a diesel for daily, never had one and never plan on!

Honda fits would be around 5-6lt/100 easily.
My EK3 also gets around 5l/100km driving around 70mph.

If the Jazz is ever going to be an option it needs to be roughly as economical as the EK3 as I will go down in horsepower by 32hp :X On the other hand I have repaired one of the wires running to the doors, a known weak spot for the 6th gen. If more go I will need to replace the whole loom realistically. It's a matter of pro's and cons but as a daily I don't want the running costs to be much higher than my EK3.

If I were to upgrade my EK3 the following would probably be done:
- Cruise control (after market obviously)
- EK4/Silverstone seats
- EK9 suspension
- Short ratio S20/40 box with long 5th gear
- Maybe a glass sunroof

That would make for probably the quickest 4 seater 56mpg/ 5l/100km econocar in this country :D

Pro's for EK3 vs Jazz:

Jazz:
  • More comfy, interior nicer place to be
  • Significantly quicker steering ratio (from what I've read)
  • Aircon
  • Much more space, more practical
  • Newer and lower mileage (by 50-60k miles)
  • Easier to install better speakers in doors (minor one but EK3's require really shallow speakers or a lot of work to the doorcards and I love good sound)
  • Buy and drive - no work needed to install all kinds of things

EK3 with mods:
  • A lot faster and probably quicker through corners too
  • Cheaper with mods than buying a Jazz
  • More choice of after market Civic parts than sand grains on a beach
Obviously my carlover-heart tells me the EK3 but when I remember that I want a real second hobby car (likes of VTI, Type R) and that I drive 1500-2500 miles a month then a Jazz doesn't sound that weird anymore imho. Torn between these two options. But obviously if a Jazz isn't at least near the fuel economy of the EK3 then never mind :p

mother has a honda jazz i think its class i love drivin it haha its a beast on fuel at the mo but the plugs need to be changed and apparently they have 8 haha and most ppl dont know this so they have to be changed id say they never wer ek3 would be more fun but as arun around if u can afford it a honda jazz would be the job but id say ud mod that too cos there cool lokin cars in my OP

i can get between 60 to 75 miles to 10 euros petrol in my ek3 the petrol is 1.52 euro per litre thats standard engine an spopon rep backbox with the tenzo r long arm it was much less

What is your budget? the old insight will walk over that for mpg, infact I'd have to drive the nuts off mine to get it down to 56mpg! if you want eco they are about as good as it gets, not a luxury car by any stretch of the imagination, but they are reasonably fun to drive. I run one daily (5-600 miles a week) and the DC2 at the weekends for fun.

I can get a reasonable Jazz with <100k miles for around 2000 pounds. I think I can't get an Insight for that kinda money. Also I can imagine I won't be that far of off having to replace batteries. Which pretty much makes the car economically written off. Or am I wrong?

You can run without batteries, I ran mine for a couple of months without and still got 65-75mpg. They are deadly slow mind! If you mains charge the battery packs and hack the controller to reduce the assist power then though get a surprising amount of life out of an old pack. Problem is they seem to be appreciating in value over here. Last year you could pick up an early '99 one with failing battery for about £1200-1800, now even ropey examples are making £2500! They are quite decent cars though, not much power but barely more than 800kg and very chuckable.

Edit: an upgraded battery pack (8Ah compared to the original 6ah) is £2k and should last about 10 years like the original packs. If you like diy people have fitted 20Ah LiPo packs to them for similar money!

Cheapest Insight I found here was 6500 euro's...

Not really :p At the moment I'm leaning more towards upgrading the EK3. Noone can tell me anything about the fuel economy of the Jazz 1.4 i-DSI @ 75mph. Besides, cheaper and more fun and I'll have my second weekendcar faster. There is another reason: I can't be car-less for too long, I need it for my work. If I have a weekendcar I can use that when I've sold my EK3 and I've not found a new Jazz yet.

Will be adding an armrest, EK9 suspension, EK4 seats, cruise control and I will try to get 4 short gears in the gearbox for more speed. If you hae any suggestion for some other cheap mods that enhance fun and/or comfort, let me know :p
