Hi Guys,

I've been about this forum for years now since I bought my 9 in 2008, loved the car since I bought it. Unfortunately its been sitting doing nothing for a few years now and needs some TLC. I've been meaning to start the restoration for years now but due to complicated circumstances unable to start until now.

I've always planned on respraying it as the colour has looked quite dull since I bought the car. Under the bonnet isn't the prettiest either so decided to go the full hog.
Currently ive got the engine, subframe and drivetrain out (unfortunately with a few sheared bolts) but its a 22yr old car now. A few minor welding jobs are required underneath at the rear but so far it isn't to bad.

Its currently got Tannabe Pro fully adjustable coilovers all round which I think will need replacing as the locking nuts have corroded on all of them. Would you recommend going back to standard suspension setup or going back to coil overs? after this restoration the car wont be on a track. The current setup is tooth breaking hard but handles like a dream.

All the bushes are going to be replaced and been looking at the spoon bush kit, any advice on these?

Also do you think its work while stripping down to a bare shell and starting from scratch?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Many thanks

Andy

If you have the time and money strip it back and go for a full respray and go for standard set up.
I've been tempted to fit some coilovers on my 9 but decided against (at the moment) .
Post some pictures of your restoration

If you are paying for a full respray strip it right back, or at least to the point you’ll know there’s no rust or filler anywhere on the car. The most annoying thing that could happen to you is for rust to poke its head out in a few years time. The usual spot is around rear arches where far too many people, including many “reputable” companies just clean up the inner wheel arch and weld on a new quarter panel. I can pretty much guarantee that if the outer quarter needs replaced so does the inner, the EK9 I just sold had one of the rear arches done before I bought it and it was starting to rust despite never seeing a gritted road. The trouble is the inner doesn’t seem to exist as a replacement panel anymore so will need fabricating, this is probably also the reason why people take shortcuts and just slap a new arch on.
As for suspension I liked my coilovers but mine was a track car, if I were to have one as a road car I’d go standard (if you can find a decent set) or spoon springs or similar high quality fixed setup. Perfectly fine for a B road blast and saves the hassle of having to adjust the suspension etc.
