Hi

Would 10w-40 semi synthetic be okay to use for an 1997 B16A engine? or should I use 5w-40?

Car is driven on a daily basis (non-track)

Thanks

Ajay

Hi

Appreciate the replies.

I just had a look at the servicing manual for (D16Yx/B16A2) US/Canada version, and it mentions to use:

5w-30 (-30 to 40 degrees C) or

10w-30 (-10 to 40 degrees C)

Should I still go for 10w -40 semi synthetic? My oil is pretty low at the moment!

Thanks :)

Yep mate 10w-40 semi ,as long as you change it every 3000-4000 miles

honda say 10w 40. i know a boy that is a top mechanic at honda and he tells me to run 5w 30 its better for the v-tec. and ye my engine fells better. if u look up hondas upgrade oil they do say 5w 30

Cool, I'll trying getting some 5w-30 tomorrow then!

Semi or full?
:nice:

Cool, really appreciate the replies!

I'll be going for Shell Helix Plus 5w-30 (Semi-synthetic).

Pick up a few litres of this tomorrow

Full synthetic is better than semi-synthetic; go for something like 1-amsoil, 2 Mobil 1. For this time of year 5-30 would be best.

I have a question, maybe someone here can answer it.

Here in my country, when I ask for a recommendation of oil, they don't watch the honda manual or everything, they just ask about the mileage of the motor, doing this is the correct thing ? for example for my ek9 the mechanic recommended me a 10W 30 oil, the oil was to thin and it passed to the ring and literally I burned oil, after 1000 km I need to put back in 1 liter of oil :nerv:

So why mechanics choose the oil using the engine mileage as a reference? :nerv:

Because of engine wear? Fully synthetic is more likely to find gaps isn't it?

Older cars need thicker oil. If you experience oil burns, means your rings aint sealing properly. Your engine must've had a good beating in the past.

I've run;
5W-30
5W-40
10W-40
0W-40

And I have not experienced any loss of oil.

Back to the topic...

5W-30 is better if your country has cold weather. Provides best protection for the street and doesn't take too long to heat up.
5W-40 is better for hot weather as the 40 provides more protection at high temperatures.
0W-40 is best for NEW engines like K20A or if you've had a rebuild. This oil provides Maximum protection from the moment you turn on the ignition.

If you track your car, anything with a 40 figure and no higher than 10W is best. MUGEN has just come out with a new oil that is 0W-40, Bloody expensive! I'd just use Castrol Edge 0W-40 instead.

Thanks for the info! if my car has 120,000 km, what oil do you recommend? we dont have cold weathers here, the coldest weather we got is at the end of year, not even below zero tempeatures :nice:

Hey guys i just googled ek4 oil ;) than i found this Website :)
some days ago I buyd a ek4 (Switzerland) the car has 280'000km (173983.88 miles)
Honda says I have to use 10W 40. But here in Switzerland we have cool weather all the time. so what you think? i used now 5W 30.
thanks

^ How cool are we talking?
If you look in your handbook, there's a little graph that shows you the recommend oil according to temperature. I use 10w-40 in all seasons here in uk hth
