Hi all i have recently fitted my hids to my ek4 and ive noticed that as soon as i turn my lights on the radio is unlistenable lol it goes all crackly, and as soon as i turn them off its perfect. i was just wondering if anybody has come accross this aswell, or if it's just me theres got to be some sort of signal in the ballast thats all i can think of, thanks for reading.

any input is appreciated.

Sounds like a bad earth.

Where have you earthed the kit to?

i havnt earthed it mate the kit is from hids direct and all the wires plugged in to each other perfect and no extra wires or anything.

Seems strange that there is no earth.

Last kit i had from Hid's Direct, was an H4-3 kit, and i have to earth the kit.

I had the same problem, come to think of it, I never had an dedicated earth either, part of the reason why i got rid and went back to nice simpe bulbs in the end. good luck finding the problem.

yeh there is deffinitly no earth here guys unless its the actuall ballest itself maybe? what do you think, thanks for the input.

When I removed my HID's, there was an earth wire and the previous owner drilled a small hole into the chassis and used a self tapping screw to secure it. Just thinking yours mite have to be done same way.

i would if there was a ground wire mate theres no other wires what so ever ??

I'd guess that one of the thicker wires that go into the bulb would be the earth? not 100% though

Yeh that's what I would assume aswell might get on to them and see what they have got o say about it I'll report back with an answer hopefully.

There has to be an earth in any system. In your case it's been pinned into the plug and it uses your original earth from your conventional bulbs that will be earthed onto your block or something. The original earths start to get really corroded and wont handle the extra current the hids run at so just give em a clean up with emery cloth and/or replace them with some 8guage wire, same stuff as you get with amp kits. Let me know how you get on bud

Ah that wicked mate thanks for the reply I rang hids direct the company I go them from and as perusal they said they have never heard of this happening but they mentioned so etching about an EMI filter apparently you wrap it around the wire and it can help stop the radio interference, but I'll give that ago mate, where abouts would the earth be for the lights? Thanks.

It will be the thickest wire on the plug usually black. If you follow it the vehicle loom back youl find where it earths to. Is your car quite rusty ?

Hmm it might be to do with a power wire being close to your antenna wire and causing a little interference. Try cleaning the grounds first though.

Is it only when the radio is on or is it still static when your trying to play a cd or iPod?

CDs are perfect and so is my iPod it's litrerly just the radio it's like a signal problem I'll give the grounds a clean tomorrow and check to see if there's any power wires near by just incase. Thanks for the advise mate.

If its only when the radio is on it will definetly be because of a power wire close to the antenna wiring. Could be the one from the headlight switch cos thats pretty close to the back of the head unit.
