H Grem, looks for the general things youd look for on any used car. Always test-drive where possible and make sure the owners being straight-up with you about its history or any mods etc. All the best with it. Im sure youll love owning and enjoying one.

As all EK9s are essentially originally from Japan used, make sure you see that things like the original owner`s manual and service records are still there. For a car like the EK9 it is likely to be used hard. However that is no reason to worry about it being in a bad condition.

The first thing you should look for is accident records or repair jobs. Look around the car to see if the paint looks different in different parts. Check to see how well all the body panels and bumpers line up or if the gaps are unsually wide.

Next, check for rust on areas like door edges, below all the weather seals especially in the boot. Open the hatch and pull the rubber seal surrounding the edge and check for accident repair. Take off the boot floor panel and look at the back inside the wheel well for repair evidence. Do the same for the the engine bay near the radiator core support. Usually and uneven colour or putty will tell a story.

Next, if possible check under the chassis by getting on the floor almost prone. Have the wheel turned full lock and inspect the drive shaft rubber boot. It should not be torn open. Make sure you have a good look at the whole chassis for repair damage from the back and under the wheel arches. Take a torch with you.

Start the car, let it warm up to operating temp and cut the ignition and wait 1 second and start the engine again. If it has trouble starting this indicates that the engine isn@t in the best condition. Check the oil level, colour, brake and clutch fluids and coolant. A poorly maintained car or neglect will tell you a story about the previous owner.

Drive the car if possible. In fact I wouldn`t buy a car I can`t test drive. Check how the clutch catches and engine response. Honda engines are very smooth. If you hear tapping noises louder that tolerable levels then something is likely to be wrong. A word of caution if you are unfamiliar with real Type R Hondas. There is no sound proofing in the stock car, so everything will be audible more than a EK4 SiR or a normal Honda.

My advise is to try and be objective when looking at a EK9. If the condition of the car is acceptable to you, calculate roughly how much will need to be done in order to get it to good running condition. Take someone experinced with you or at least a friend who knows about Hondas. Try not to go alone.
