hey guys,

Got pulled by my old friends, the polis (police) for having HID's fitted to my car.
they say they are illegal and gave me a £30 fine.

are they illegal??

duffy

HID's are supposed to be fitted to car's with either auto leveling adjusters or auto leveling suspension. also you should really have projectors

halogen bulbs give a beam from left to right(horizontal) and HID's give a beam from up to down (vertical) or the other way round can't remember of the top of my head but anyway, when you change the bulbs over the reflector is wrong so this means the beam becomes horribly distorted.. which could cause blinding to on coming drivers..

TBH i went to court over a screamer pipe and they added a £55 fine on top of the fine for the screamer pipe for having the HID's on my starlet without an adjuster and a court order ordering me to change them over and then get them chekced at a VOSA registered garage, so you got off lightly.. :p

although there is a manual adjuster on alot of Ek's like me EK4 for example i don't think this counts as an adjuster as i think it has to be an auto system...
i may be wrong thought but from i found after researching it at the time tis stuff came up.

sorry to hear it though dude. the police ( revenue collection officers ) will do anything for a quick buck..

I got pulled over for my HID's as I dazzled a copper the other day. He was sound enough and just advised me to get the level of them checked, he said he wasn't bothered how bright they were but where they were aimed. Went away, checked details on system and came back and started asking me about my car and asking if it was quick and what it drives like lol.

Anyways I investigated and turns out my O/S bulb was in the opposite way to the N/S, so I rotated it 180 degress and seems fine now. Checked it for the beam level and its sound. I suppose it depends how fussy the copper is when you get pulled over. In my opinion the OEM HID's on cars like Minis, Porsches and especially Range Rovers are event brighter than the aftermarket HID's, its worse with Range Rovers as there headlights point at eye level due to them been so big and my car been lowered.

Ive had them in my 56 plate Astra for over 12 months now aswell and never had any issues, passed MOT with them aswell

Cheers man

I'll probs just take them out then, save the hassle.

Wish I stayed in cali man

Not legal in California.

as said mate would probably jus go for a duller set maybe 4k or 6k its not worht a £30 fine off the arseholes lol

had 6k ones in my car before..................never again after getting blinded by chavs in corsa`s etc due to the beam being all over the place.

i know the standard headlight bulbs are like candle`s but do a bit of research and pick out a decent h4 bulb :)

Nokya bright yellow H4 are a good bulb, and I f**king hate HID's, far too bright! should be for audi, merc, etc only!

HID's should only really be factory fitted or as said with adjuster and that.
As long as they dont dazzle oncoming traffic, you should be ok... ive passed alot of police with my hids on and they dont stop to pull me over, then again im pretty low to the ground so my beam level is fairly low away from eye level :p

It's really the traffics you need to stay from which Glasgow has plenty.

I retrofitted my lights on my civic to HID's with projectors and the difference is light and day compared to the stock lights

When the mot rules come in next year, only standard hids will be legal. My mot'er is saying if you haavnt got washers on headlights the hids are not standard and will fail an mot.

That's all us 98spec jdm dc2 owners screwed.

To make them legal you are ment to have :
Self adjusting tilt brackets and those washer jets that spray the headlights incase dirt gets on it And technically a different reflector/ glass setup on the light :) but c'mon who does all this ;) the police are ment to give you a warning and time to take them off before fining I thought, altho they are trying to get on the spot fines for them,
