metal shavings in oil pan

have not got a clue about oil temps but thinking i mite need one due to the colour of the oil maybe

Gauges, Gauges, Gauges, Gauges, Gauges... I did a rebuild, also had metal swarf but no gauge - ran it in the proper way and then did some track work. Because I didnt know that the metal swarf had killed my pump & pressure I was VTECing with low pressure (but no light) which fryed my bearings on the track :(

Oil pressure gauge is your best friend!

yes i will buy guages. but im asking about an oil cooler is it worth me getting one at the same time ?

and also i can get cheap guages but is it worth spending the extra 40 or 50 quid to get the likes of STACK or VDO guages ?

i hope i have not been doing the same thing DV8 would be gutted if it was the case.

I would say if you are struggling to afford higher end gauges (Stack, SPA Design etc.) then go for a cheaper one you can afford. It will give you a better reading of oil temp/pressure than the standard gauges anyway. But there are some cheaper ones on demon tweeks (ie Smiths Oil Pressure for £33) that still give good precision although you also need to shell out for a sender so keep that in mind too as this may be another £30.

i've found some for around 30 quid with everything apart from the wires..

i would still like some views on worth getting an oil rad though. because if i don't purchase the rad i could afford some better guages

I would recommend a electrical as opposed to mechanical gauge (usually cheaper) for oil pressure. I've seen the mechanical ones (where the hot oil feed is routed to the gauge itself) leak.

I agree with goba, go electrical.

I Installed a SPA design dual purpose oil pressure and temp (which comes with the senders) - when I was at the ring this year I was seeing some very high temps so if you are tracking it then an oil cooler is a big help to keep your oil stable & safe.

1. Install a oil pressure gauge.
2. Install a oil temp gauge if not already installed.

Your gauges will tell you if you need an oil cooler or not.

Very true, good advice!

Personally wouldn't skimp on gauges. If you ever sell the car you can transfer them so good ones are a worthwhile investment.

could posibly be bits of the roghy burs on machined engine on rebuild still finding there way out. deffinatly somthing worth keeping you eye on and seeing if the quauntaty of metal goes up.

yeah i was thinking this just i can get a good discount if i purchase the lot in one go. so i was thinking while i've got no oil in the car it's worth doing it all together.

I don't know if you really think probaly wont need an oil cooler then i will give it a miss but from what i heard b16 engines get the oil extremly hot on track ...

Dont install a oil cooler unless you need to, its just more parts that can leak.
And if you need to, use a oil thermostat.
I use a oil cooler with thermostat, yes, but I have to, otherwise I would not be.
Only installed in order to operate the car on track with my driving style and not damage the engine, too much.

Get a oil cooler with a thermostat sandwich plate. That way you'll be sure oil temps are always under control. You'll also see a drop in coolant temp. Its a win ,win situation ... specially as there's "no expense spared... "

lol that was before i found out i was going to be made redundant im afraid.

but in that case if i get a thermostat for the oil will 2 sandwitch plates be ok ? or is that not risking it too much ?

well then how do you go around fitting the guages to a thermostatic plate ?

You find another way to tap into the oil system.
That location is not the only location to sample from.
If you are going to be using -AN fittings, you can sample at any one of the connection points.

and whats the advantage of having a thermostat on the oil system then ? it mite be a very stupid question but i am curious to know why because most of the kits do not have a thermostat on the sandwitch plate. and if they do they are wayyyy out of my budget
