Hi Guys,

I hope you are all doing well. I haven't posted on here in quite a while and thought it was the right time to start a new thread whilst we do the shell swap and upgrades to our Civic.

We originally built the car over the back end of 2013 ready for 2014. Started its life as a 1.5lsi in grey. The work started pretty much straight away with removing the engine and preparing the bay for a fresh coat of paint whilst the D16y8 block was away with the machinists. The car never undertook any major changes to the styling it just sat nicely with some 282's behind some FanBlade wheels.

The engine spec was pretty simple yet effective.

D16y8
New OEM Honda oil pump
New OEM Honda water pump
New OEM Honda timing belt kit
New OEM Honda head gasket
ARP head studs
Ferrera Stem seals
Over bored .5mm
Eagle rods
Vitara pistons
ACL race bearings
RC 550cc injectors
p28 ecu
obd2a to obd1 harness
Ebay T04e turbo
Ebay inter cooler
Tial waste gate
Tial BOV
Log manifold
MidDevelopments 2.5'' down pipe
MidDevelopments 2.5'' exhaust
MidDevelopments 2.5'' inter cooler hard pipes
Mushroom filter

Tuned on Neptune and made 302hp at 1 bar of boost to which I feel was a very quick car, BUT we were pretty much maxed on the turbo and inter cooler and we wanted pure reliability and the car was looking a bit tatty. So this year we have decided to re-shell the car along with a few upgrades.

New upgrades are as follows -

Bisimoto cam
Bisimoto cam pulley
Bisimoto springs and titanium retainers
Head re skimmed
Cometic head gasket
Gates Racing kevlar timing belt
Precision 5431e turbo
MidDevelopments stainless manifold
MidDevelopments 2.75'' down pipe
MidDevelopments 2.75'' single box exhaust
MidDevelopments 2.5'' short route inter cooler hard pipes
MidDevelopments 3'' intake pipe
MidDevelopments catch can
Ported head
Back door inter cooler
K&N Filter
Hondata s300
Boost by gear
1.5 bar boost (Ish)
4 pot brake setup
Stitch welded Ek4 subframe
Non PS Ek9 steering rack
15x8 wheels
225 50 15 tyres
LSD box (with the intention of building a super strong box with a plated diff in the near future)

I have probably forgotten lots but I will add them as I go along.

Although we are hoping for some good figures reliability is the main focus so that we can get lots of seat time on track ready for entering a race series next year. We are also hoping that with the LSD box, boost by gear and wider tyres we get better superb traction.

Pictures are of the new shell and how the engine sits now all timed up and ready for the sump to be fitted after we weld the bung in for the temp sensor.

More updates to follow.

Thanks for looking

Ben

Bit of an update on this now.

All the front wheel arches have been painted along with all the front to protect against rust and to make look more presentable.
Next will be painting the bay itself, we have decided we are going to keep it with the OEM look of satin black.

We are still waiting on a quite a few parts so I will keep updating this as soon as we make progress.

Pictures below are of how it used to look with the old shell and one of the new turbo.

Thanks again

No interest in this build? Is it because its a D series!? Haha dont let it fool you, this car will be seriously quick!

We have had the subframe, lower arms, arbs and brakcets back from coating and they look fresh! Really happy how they turned out.

Engine is coming along now inlet is back on, fuel rail, regulator and lines are fitted. New oil feed fitted along with new sandwich plate and oil filter lines waiting for the new oil cooler to arrive.
We are planning on getting the engine in this next week coming :)
After that we can fit the exhaust manifold and turbo and then start planning on where other things are going to go.
We are waiting for the new intercooler to arrive also so we can fit it up and decide on the shortest route for the pipework.

Pictures to follow shortly with the progress :)

I remember this, reliability is key, rather have a reliable smooth motor than a stupidly fast one that will break every week.

Yeah exactly.
Thats why we had head work done this time around to ensure all components are fresh and up to the job which also means we could rev higher but i think we will be sticking at around the 7200rpm mark with a redline of 7300rpm BUT having said that we will wait until the tuning is being done and decide a final redline depending on where the power is made, pointless revving higher when there is no power being made.
Turbo is good for 500hp which we dont want to be anywhere near just yet and being a precision unit should be more than enough for relability.
Intercooler is a 500hp rated unit also.
Brand new ACL big end and main bearings just to freshen things up.
New 19 row mocal cooler rather than the 13 row ebay item we had last time.
We have also been having a think about the exhaust and we may stick with 2.5" as the outlet on the 5431e is that and by my reckoning will still be all good for 400hp, unless anyone thinks differently? Let me know please.

Thanks

Just some pictures of how the engine and car are looking now. Oil cooler has arrived :) will get some pictures uploaded asap of that.

In the Civic or S3, Evo?

Civic we will run about 400bhp.

S3 is 280bhp and use as my daily.

Evo is about 320bhp but is going in for a map running on SD should see around 370-380bhp then which will do me until the build next year :)

Nothing super special.

Thanks

Love this build mate, engines looking very well

Thanks Deans96r! yeah it is definitely a lot better this time around, the first time we just chucked it together and ran it as it was. This time round has had more thought go into it! cant wait to get it back in the bay and start making the intercooler pipework and downpipe up for it :)

impressive by all means. When you had the cheap ebay stuff how well did these components work?

Thanks saxophonias, appreciate it.

To be honest it wasnt all cheap ebay stuff it was an ebay t04e turbo, ebay intercooler, and ebay log manifold that we ran for a year @ 1bar without any problems at all. Just wanted to upgrade for extra power. But if i was to build another one for a street car and wanted 300-330hp i wouldnt hesitate to get another ebay t04e and if anything did happen to it i would just send it in to Garrett for their internals to be fitted and it would be all good :)

Just a couple of updates.

Engine and Gearbox now coupled together and re-fitted into the engine bay.

We have the Mishimoto radiator, slim line fan, fan shroud, thermostat, and fan switch. We have covered half of the radiator and shroud with Reflect-A-Gold tape to keep as much heat away from it as possible because it sits pretty damn close to the exhaust manifold.

At the moment we are in the process of mounting the intercooler and deciding on the route for the hard pipes to go. We decided that we would go with the inlet on the back side of the cooler (chopped, blanked, cut a new hole and rewelded the side section onto the rear) and the outlet on the side as we could still make a shorter route doing this way, otherwise we would of had to move the radiator over 2 inches which would mean it would clash with the manifold.

Once we have finished with the intercooler it will be onto mounting the oil cooler, which we are still unsure where to mount due to the room we have, original idea was behind one of the vents in the front bumper on the pass side similar to how evo's run theirs as stock but this would mean opening up the vent in the bumper which im not to keen on the idea but we will see.

We still have a lot of work ahead of us but we are hoping to have it up and running by mid November so that we can do all the little things ready to go for a base map. Then we can get lots of road miles on ready for a proper map.

Sorry for the pictures as these were taken on my phone.

Thanks

Ben

Thanks mate!

Slowly getting there now :) still waiting on parts to arrive. Will be making the catch can next week too.

More updates soon :)

Wow that is work of art ,very clean and purposeful single slammer can hold big HP and yours shows that,

Love the build! D series are good engines and this shows it can be boosted. Will be great to see it up and running, keep up the good work and the good posts :)

Leej8 - Thankyou very much sir! Yeah they are a very good engine aslong as it is looked after and not over revved in my opinion.

B16Swt - And thankyou sir. Yeah they react really well to boost, totally transforms the car. Honda should of built them boosted from factory!

Been working on the intercooler pipe from the turbo side, its going to be tight but we have rotated the compressor housing so its facing more towards the block then using a 135° silicone we will be able to make the rest up out of hard pipe. The old setup had the compressor housing facing directly towards the intercooler and a 90° coming off and straight into it but that meant that the intercooler had to be offset and we werent too keen on that. Anyway should be done soon so will get some pictures up.

Thanks
