I'm looking to buy a pulsar gtir as it's been a kind of dream car I've always wanted since my mate owned a 350bhp one that was savage back in the day. What's people's opinions on owning one in this day and age as I'm aware parts are pretty much impossible to get hold of and reliability issues especially gearboxes. Should I stay away from a pulsar but then it's the same story of owning a lancia delta evo another dream car!

There is the usual issues with rust aswell as most have been messed about with if i was on the lookout for one it would as standard as possible

A mate of mine and @DVD had an insane 500+ brake one years ago. Was imported by a local import place and it had been put together in a lab, inside the car was a fixed seat, battery and fuel cell... that was pretty much it! I always fancied one but it's the issues you mention that killed it for me. Most of them are utter rot boxes now and clean one would cost over the odds for what it is. Gearbox wise I think you could probably still source the parts required for a rebuild.

I think that is a car that should have had slightly more iconic status than it did. I remember a couple years ago seeing a few for sale for about 1700 quid and thinking they will end up with the wrong people and be destroyed.

That said tho if you want one.... go for it. Scratch that itch lol.

But sometimes people (myself included) should never meet their heros. For me it was a s2 escort rs turbo. In my mind when I was 15 there was nothing cooler. My 22 year old self disagreed... if it wasn't broken needing fixed it was needing body work and then when it was just about how I imagined it would be... stolen :angry2:

The one I'm looking at seems really clean with zero rust and has had a full respray but not sure if it's in its original colour, could be hiding secrets. Engine wise I've been told it's standard with a nistune ecu running 300bhp. I'm also aware pulsars need uprated brakes as the oem ones are completely crap, my mate use to go through a set of new pads every month on oem brakes!

500bhp+ is mental, my mates 350bhp one was savage at the time we use to leave porsche 996 gt2's, gt3's and ferrari 360's for dust. Surprisingly his car was very reliable use to take it upto 160+ with no issues. All he had was a mongoose straight through exhaust intake and remap.

Rob have you seen the prices of series one rs turbos nowadays they ask crazy money when they are nothing in comparison to our hondas even escort cosworths have become supercar money. I can't ever imagine our ek9's and dc2's ever reaching the value of old skool ford's.

It was an absolute weapon. To be totally honest I don't think I've seen anything like it in the flesh since. Every bit of it was necessary to make it go faster. If it wasn't needed it wasn't there. Must of been about 2002/2003 and the guy paid 10k for it. Was absolutely untouchable for speed but was about as reliable as a Renault. I'll see if Dave has any photos of it.

I know it's mad the cash in them. I think 98 tegs and ek9s will hold a certain value but will never touch the fords over here. Probably down to the heritage stuff built in Essex and rallied in every Forrest in the uk lol. Must be a lot of people with a big soft spot for them. On the ups side I still own the stolen s2! On paper anyway. Was chopped up and the engine went in an Orion years ago. Might be worth something one day....

So you think you'll get a pulsar?

I don't know mate my heart says buy my head says avoid! My biggest fear is could turn out to be a money pit and if I did sell it on in the future the market for pulsars are very small. Think I'm going stay away for the time being as the seller really is no help either doesn't seem to know much or could be hiding things. I don't mind checking the car out if I had all my questions answered but it's pretty far away and if it turns out to be a waste of time I would be pretty worked up.

In fact @R1PPU do you remember Gregs purple pulsar?

Rings a bell! I was like 10/12 at the time and remember my brother showing me it at the time and it was absolutely insane?! That was when I was just getting into cars and thought it was the coolest thing ever haha

My heart says go out and smash it every weekend but my head says no.... and here I am on tuesday night just beginning to feel better lol. If you want one mate I say go for it. Doesnt have to be this one just keep an eye out. Maybe even worth buying one with problems then at least you know where you are with it and can make it good properly? Where is this one btw?

Thats probably it. Was way ahead of it's time. Most cars were still wearing fiberglass front ends back then!

Don't be daft bud. Happy to help and besides I've got a Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Honda CBR 600 RR, Honda lawn mower and a wardrobe full of Honda t shirts. Don't think it would fit in with the rest of the fleet lol.
