been thinking of running a oil cooler on my eg for a while now! as I'll be looking to do more track days in the coming year and what to keep things in check!

Heard people say loss of pressure ect with coolers is this a problem?

I was going to go for a mocal thermostatic kit from tegiwa with a small cooler would this be the best solution?

I don't have any temp readings as of yet as I don't have gauges but going to get them for the car also!

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Ryan

Get the gauges and see if you need a cooler! If your oil never goes above 110 then you dont need one.

I pieced a kit together myself mate much cheaper. Mocal thermo sandwich plate some an10 hose and fittings and 16 row cooler all off eBay for less than 100. My oil pressure at idle was about 20 psi hot but was with a new oil pump.

I run tegiwas 25row kit.
Only grumble is it comes with -8 hose instead of -10 but this doesn't seem to have effected anything as far as I can tell.
As John says, id get the gauges first and run the car on track. See how it goes. You can run good quality oil at 120c all day (mine is 120c with the 25row....) so don't be too worried for the first outing.

My thinking was that when my engine is out I can get it all fitted perfectly and not have the hassle of putting it all in with the engine in place!

As I want to keep it all well within check building my engine up for next year just don't want issues causing trouble at the start and having to take it apart again @jesse888

It is doable to fit without moving the engine but I get your point.

I'm in the same boat,
I've got gauges but never ran the car with them in.

I planned on removing the heat exchanger and fitting a 13 row cooler with a thermostatic sandwich plate while the car is in bits.

But with a full width dual core koyo rad I'm not sure if I will need the oil cooler if the heat exchanger is efficient enough.

You need to get some figures from gauges and work from there. My oil temp hits 120 on track running 10w60 millers, no cooler fitted at the moment.

In an ideal world yes,
But as Ryan also says it would make more sense to fit it now while the cars in bits.
It could also save having a ruined track day worrying about oil temps being to high, especially on a hot day on a fast track.

I haven't got my cooler fitted yet and I'm seeing about 100 on the road with a bit of spirited driving. I gather with it being boosted it will increase significantly on track (only finished it a few eeks ago so no trackwork yet). I've gone for a 19 row cooler and mocal thermo plate, I'll make the hoses up at work. Hopefully that will keep it in check.

Any one that's not boosted got any ball park oil temp figures?

There's a best motoring vid of a standard teg going round fuji and I think he hits something like 140 after a few laps! I know there is some long straights but still...

My teg engine runs very hot very fast...a cooler was 100% needed. 1.6 engines were borderline.

@Steve M has a cooler fitted on his b18c coupe. Think he has a cover on it most of the time for road use as the temps are too low.

Correct @robthedoc
I've got a mocal 13 or 16 row cooler (can't remember what size exactly off the top of my head) along with a mocal thermostatic sandwich plate. I find that if I leave it uncovered then it rakes an age to warm the oil right up, on a cold day it doesn't warm up fully at all. So I've got a Perspex cover over 2/3rds of it most of the time on the road which regulates it better. Take it off for track use and the temp never climbs above 110degrees

so would you say the thermostatic plate is not that effective then?

The thermostatic plate is weird I have it and it is never fully closed so there is always flow through the cooler, just the out let on the plate opens further when the oil temp increases.

Just to add my experience

With my B16b Ek9 with gearset on the track without an oil cooler I was reading over 130 degrees at the oil filter and running ester synthetic oil, so it would still need changed after each track event

With my K20 swap Im using a Mocal 16 row oil cooler and oil temps don't usually go above 110 degrees even over 30mins on track. I used to run the thermostat in the adapter plate but now that the car is only used on track I don't use the stat and I let the car idle until warm before going out on track

When picking lines use quality 10AN size and keep the lines as short as possible to help oil pressure

I don't have an oil pressure gauge but I used the same cooler setup with the B18 and k20 over the past 2 years or so with Zero problems. Another important thing to add is a good baffled sump because this is one of the main causes of loss of oil pressure on track
