Hi,

Im fitting an oil pressure guage into the K20.

I know that I want to do it with an oil sandwich plate rather than tapping a t piece to the standard sensor location however does anyone have any experiance with these sandwich plates?

As apart from price I cant see anything different between these 2

Mishimoto Universal Oil Filter Sandwich Take Off Plate | eBay

Ultralite OIL FILTER SANDWICH PLATE GAUGE FITMENT Z0172 | eBay

Also those that are using these, did you use PFTE tape on the threads before screwing it in?

Can anyone recomend a good sandwich plate to use?

Cheers

Si

I can't offer much help as I have one fitted and I'm about to fit another for my oil cooler. But I would also like to know about the PTFE tape. I use it at work hoe hydraulics but with engines I don't wanna risk it lol

Here is what I am using. Mishimoto thermostatic sandwich plate, I tapped two ports; oil p and oil temp. 1/8" NPT

PTFE tape was used on both ports.
AS an FYI. the center adapter, the silver threaded part, it does not work very well, the brass color versions, as in the OPs linked images, are the way to go. The silver one in my picture allows the oil filter to back off while the engine is running. No matter how tight you get the filter, it backs off and leaks. I am swapping out to brass color version now.

Cheers for that Tama, seems worth while fitting the mishimoto one then.

I was going to use PTFE tape as I want to fit it and not have to worry about it leaking or coming loose.

Have you tried PTFE tape on the silver centre adaptor to see if that helps?

Tape on that would not make it any better, the surface on the threads are much to smooth and allows the filter to slip off much more easily, tape will only make it a huge hassle when changing filters as it would need to be re-taped every time.

I think the adapter is over engineered from mishimoto.
Mishimoto is not the only maker of sandwich plates that work very well...just happens to be what I was able to get, pricey mishimoto is with this part. Im sure there are others that do a great job too.

I need to get a thermostatic sandwich plate for my k20 now for a oil cooler set up, was going to go for the mishimoto one, but now you've said that Tama I don't fancy any leaks so not sure which one too go for now :/

Greddy...wish I did that route.

The mishimoto sandwich plate is fine, it was the center adapter that is not right. Can get that online for cheep, which I already have. 5 minute fix really. Mishimoto is also adjustable for different temp settings. This I like and will stick with it.

I assume that for a daily with out a thermostat it would do more harm then good?

Ive used an ultralite one in the past worked fine for me. I always use PTFE tape on the 1/8 ports.

For a thermostatic plate for an oil cooler I currently have a mocal one, although they don't have any ports for gauges on them. I couldn't find any that do apart from cheap rubbish or mega expensive.

I'll just run an in line adaptor in the oil cooler piping when I get round to fitting it :)

ive got the mocal one £10 delivered rrp £40 im sure an machine shop could tap it for gagues etc

A thermostatic sandwich plate would be used when an oil cooler is in the mix.
Non-thermostatic sandwich plate would be used to allow ports for gauges, nothing more really...

If a oil cooler is in the mix, using the thermostatic sandwich plate allows the oil to get to temp faster, then it opens up allowing hot oil to run through the oil cooler. Nice to have when racing the engine and seeing higher temperatures.

Adding a thermostatic sandwich plate and oil cooler should only be done if absolutely needed...more parts and connections that can start to leak or fail being the main reason.

I had the mocal setup with the thermostat before sandwhich plate ie flow and return passed through it first then to normal plate with gauge take offs

with these sandwich plates oil filter need to be really tight when installed
they tend to get loose
also you need to check for oil leaks more often.
the greddy with 2 o-rings looks smart !

i have a sandwhich plate fitted to my b16 and the engine is leakin oil badly now from it so gona have to take it off.

afaik its unbranded probably an ebay one, do the better makes like greddy etc actually work ? need one to run gauges too but bit sceptical of gettin a good one if its still gona leak ?
