Rate your suspension set up

What did TEIN UK say about the lowest spring rate they can handle before revalving is needed.

The dampers are short stroke and only have about 2" travel to the bumpstops, they are designed for circuit racing (hence the name circuit master N1)

With that sort of stroke on the dampers, you would be bottoming them out too easy with too light springs, they are designed for 20k upwards

You would need something longer stroke like the type RA if you wanted to run much softer springs

As i said they don't go very high either, even with 22k front springs and them as high as they can safely go on the front the tyre is tucked in the arch slightly

That's a shedload of camber for such small amounts of roll!

Does it affect your straighline acceleration and braking at all?

Nope, still extremely good under braking and no loss of traction even in the wet. Might be a different story once the new engine is built but for now it's fine

Judging by the wear pattern on the tyres the camber seems to work well. with the car being as rigid as it is and the suspension being so stiff, all the energy is transferred to the tyres

Sounds good, I was impressed with how much grip I gained going up to 2.5 degrees, I considered more but was concerned about tyre wear with it being my daily.

Interested in how you ended up with 4 degrees, was it steady small increases over a period of time or a recommendation from someone? Any tyre temps or anything taken when you are trackside?

I would absolutely love to have a passenger ride it, it sounds mental! :D

Trial and error really!

Used to run a bit more toe out on the back before i caged the car to encourage some better turn in, but with the added stiffness of the cage, the last trip to knockhill on the old suspension the back end was tail happy and required too much corrective steering out the corners

So thats why the rear toe out was reduced, ideally you want to have a rear end which is planted on circuit then you can work about how to improve turn in etc from adjustments up front

Used to run about -3 deg with the old suspension but with the new stuff added more negative. i find zero toe works well, toe out is too light and chews up tyres, toe in is a bit boring

Don't have the instruments to check tyre temps, just go by the wear pattern on the tyres, one trackday i was down end of last year i can away with the middle of the tyres showing most wear running them at 28psi hot (R888) so knew for the next track day to reduce the pressures further to about 26psi hot

It's all good fun, you learn so much about the car on track days, keeps it interesting :nice:

Make - D2 racing
Model - Street
Anti roll bars - Stock front and rear
Comfort - 7/10 Bit bumpy but not too bad
Handling - 9/10
Price - £500
Positives - found D2s horrid on Eks but they seem to work amazingly well on CRXs, handle like a dream and has almost no bodyroll on full stiff, 5 years old and still going strong
Negatives - Now you can get Meister R etc for the same price that are better, also a bit harsh for road use to a lot of people

Make - BC Racing
Model - BR Series
Anti roll bars - Standard EK4
Comfort - 9/10
Handling -8/10
Price - £650 Approx
Positives - could not believe how comfy these were, my missus didnt even notice I had changed suspension. Car stays flat through corners and the nose feels much more direct. Very good value for money as I would rate them up with some of the more expensive kits.
Negatives - C spanners that they came with dont look like theyre brilliant quality but theyve not broken yet.

Make - Tein
Model - Type FLEX
Anti roll bars - stock EK9 JDM Type R
Comfort - Very firm, I guess. That is how I like it...not comfortable at all, really.
Handling - Great. No complaints!
Price - About $2000 USD I think.
Positives - Feels like a track setup, not a 'sports' setup. Adjustability (clicks are handy for setting stiffness by hand, even with no tool. Good quality build, height adjustable.
Negatives - Nothing for me. These suit me perfectly.

Car - EK3

Suspension - Koni Sport dampers with Ground Control coilover sleeves, 66N/mm springs at the front, 44N/mm at the rear

Anti roll bars - stock EK3 front, EK4 rear

Comfort - Poor.

Handling - Good.

Price - ~$1000 USD.

Summary - Good handling but after 2 years I'm getting tired of the harshness.

Make - Meister
Model - Zeta-R
Anti roll bars - stock EK9 JDM Type R
Comfort - Stiff! Even on low settings it still feels hard. Although i prefer that
Handling - Great in the twisties and stable with high speed cornering.
Price - Around £1000?
Positives - Car very stable in cornering, the handling is spot on imo.
Negatives - They might be a little stiff for some although i like them that way. Speed bumps and pot holes should be avoided though i guess thats the same with any set of coils!

USDM EK chassis

Damper- Koni Yellow Race w/Ground Control sleeve
Springs- fr600lbs/rr700lbs
Sway Bars- fr24mm/rr22mm
Extras- all spherical bearing bushings except front upper and front LCA rear which are hardended rubber. Front lower ball joint is also extended length.
Wheels/Tires- 949 Racing 15x8 +35 and Toyo R888 225/45

Awesome setup, rotates just enough off throttle and pushes slightly on throttle. still want to change upper mounts front stock, but very happy over my old setup, HKS HiperMax Pro.

Sorry about that , my post warrants further explanation:

Make - EK9
Model - Stock
Anti roll bars - Stock 23mm front and 22mm rear
Comfort - 10/10
Handling - 10/10
Price - N/A
Positives : Fantastic handling and good spring / damper rate relationship, although the stock suspension is really quite hard it is not crashy or bouncy over bumps and very comfortable. Honda have worked hard here. Car is very predictable at all times and feels safe and planted.
Faults? - not adjustable in any shape or form.

I have used my car now for over a year including mixed road driving and also trackdays at castlecombe and a summer trip to the nurburgring. On the nurburgring the handling of the car was nothing short of Amazing. Only modifications handling wise were Toyo R888 rubber on 50 series profile.
The circuit offers everything from fast sweeping bends, camber changes, compression bombholes, rough surfaces (carousel) and the car felt 100% planted round there everywhere. For a stock car I am very very impressed and have no desire to change the springs or dampers.

If I were to upgrade I think I would seriously need to get the wallet out and go for Ohlins or something of that kind of standard as the stock suspension is so good.

Think people are too quick to abandon the stock suspension and stick a set of coilovers on their cars when lots of other work needs doing which affects the behaviour of the car more so than the shocks and springs. All our Hondas are 10 years or so old now, Rubber deteriorates with age, before changing anything at all I think the suspension bushings should be the first point of call. Personally I avoid polyurethane bushings like the plague and would go for standard or Hardrace rubber bushings. I have a set of Hardrace Rear trailing arm bushes to go in mine when I get time to install them; all my other bushes visually appear to be in good order at the moment. The rear trailing arm bushings have a huge effect on the stability of the car and general handling once they have been renewed. I installed a new set on my brothers’ DC2 (albeit had done 110000 miles) and the difference was night and day.

hope my post has been useful
:drive:

I haven't been on this forum long but this is one of the most sensible well written posts I've read on any forum for a long time.

TBH it's seriously making me contemplate sourcing an OEM damper set up and go for some Eibach lowering springs.

I've got some coilovers on mine but I have a feeling they're ****** judging by the way the car handles, could be wrong mind.

How much do OEM shocks go for?

I changed now for

Good choice :win:

A kind of rookie question. I have a fresh EK9 in transit from Japan and would like to lower a bit the car with spoon progressive springs and add around 2 or 2.5 camber (out) in front and 1 to 1.5 rear (out). Is is possible having the OEM suspension?
