Rust

Overall, for 21 years of age my EK9 like many others is very clean and rust free. I had it under sealed professionally around 5 years ago and it’s probably due again now. The floor, underneath and generally all round is solid.

Lately though I’ve noticed some rust that’s probably been on it for a long time but only came to my attention after it’s been stripped out as I would never have seen it with the interior in.

The inner sill in both front foot wells appears to be quite far gone. It’s still solid enough and doesn’t crumble when tapped with a screwdriver etc. The outer sills under the side skirts only have very mild surface rust not to the extent of the inside.

Other than that the outer and inner arches are also showing signs of rust. The inner arch inside the car is rusty but still solid, mainly just surface that flakes off but the entire panel isn’t crumbling. The outer arch is only showing small bubbling through the paint. Drivers is worse than passenger.

What we thinking? Get the angle grinder out and some repair panels in ASAP? The car is kept in a unit nowadays 100% dry storage and rarely driven except for trackdays which may or may not be wet depending on l, also never used in winter. Not much exposure to salt roads etc.

Here’s some pics anyway. Opinions welcomed. Cheers!

Mines like that on the door sills aswell. underneith all clean. It is going into bodyshop after i fit my clutch tonight so il see what he says. then get back to you

If you properly poked it it would start to crumble pretty quickly. The only way to deal with it is to cut it out, if you get it done don’t waste your time by not replacing the inner arch, a lot of people just replace the outer but if you leAve the inner there it will come back in a few years. The passenger side on mine got done before I bought it, they never did the inner and now it’s starting to come through again. Annoyingly as far as I’m aware there’s no inner arch repair panel available so it will be a custom job, if you do find one please post a link to it here.
If it is a track car I’d leave happy to live with it for some time yet but it will get worse.
Another place to check is under the front wheel arch plastic liners, they like to rust there as well.
