Slight rust on bodywork

Had a crack in the paint in the drivers rear quarter since owning the car, must have occurred at some point before my ownership.

It was fine really for a long while until recently when I've noticed orange starting to come out of the crack which suggests rusting underneath. Looks very minor but just want to nip it in the bud before it takes a hold.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a method of controlling this or get rid of it? If it has to be resprayed then so be it, or could just a localised paint repair be what's needed?

Hate to say it, but that looks like a chunk of isopon has cracked, try a magnet on that area and compare the strength to another area of the car.

Of course, that would explain it I suppose.. I will try that tomorrow when it's light.

So suppose it's been filled, what then? Old filler out and refill & respray?

Yep fella, unfortunately it needs a visit to the bodyshop. Might be worth having a look around the rest of the car, and get all minor imperfections done at same time.

i would be taking the rear plastics out and getting a look at the back of that panel and seeing how bad it is. ie how big a dent has be filled in.

Well guys thanks for the answers!

I stuck a magnet to it and it sticks pretty well but not quite as strongly as the same area on the other side which suggests there is some filler there.

I am in the process of removing my interior again now the winters gone away and hadn't noticed any dents last time.

Just removed the interior panel again and theres no dent here. Only some small marks which suggest a dent was popped out at one time but only minor. They look like punch marks or something? It probably has a small amount of filler there but not loads I would say.

Will be heading for a body shop this year to respray front bumper as it's covered in stone chips & also that and any other parts that need touching up!

I just removed the interior panel on the opposite side to my "filler" area and there's a lot more of the marks...

I suspect they might be spot welds or something? Maybe from a skin repair? Looks like this little EK9 has had it's fair share of dents or bumps...

Maybe it was raced at one time in it's life or something...

This is the other side where there are a lot more -

I wouldn't worry too much, it'd be worse to find a cracked chassis rail or something!

The only problem with that area is they're likely going to need to re-paint the entire quarter and the park that follows over the pillars to make it look right.

Worth doing sooner than later otherwise it'll be more work. Once done I'd suggest drenching the entire inner area with Dynax S50 ;)

There was a dent so they welded a few straws of metal to it and pulled it out with a slide hammer and then ground the metal off, used a skim of filler and repainted.

I would get it taken back to bare metal, treat with epoxy primer and then get them to do all the filler work over the epoxy instead of under it.

Chassis is fine, already had all that checked out when I bought it lol. Yeah the quarter panel is a big area sadly.. But needs must! I am going to spray the inside white soon to make it nice and clean, may get some of that for down the insides of the panels.

I see! I thought they were spot welds. Interesting really. At least it's been done to a high standard. Can't even tell from the outside. When it comes to it I'll suggest that to the body shop and see what they say!

Thanks!
