Alright guys i was just wondering if anyone has installed the spoon cams. I wanted to upgrade my cams but this is my everyday car and i dont want it killing the petrol. Are the springs, retainers and new valves a good idea ? what diffrence will these make on there own ? Are there any other good cams out there i dont want it losing that boost at 6000 tho ?

If you check around here most people's thoughts and decisions concern Toda, Skunk2 and Buddy Club cams. To be honest I'm always cautious for parts being not much into discussion........Spoon undoubtely is a leading company but just like Mugen's E/M which is not high in rankings, the same happens with Spoon cams.....but they are still overpriced too

Nevertheless, any brand of cam you get is a matter of compromise depending what you want from it to do. So I would say you have nothing to loose in case you go for Toda or Skunk2, as each is top notch and does exactly what it is supposed to do, i.e, Toda designed with mid-range performance in mind, and Skunk2 for top power. It all depends on you likes!

All people I know/read about having installed those cams reported noticable performance gains and reliability. I'm using Skunk2 Stage 2 and all I can tell you is that you won't loose any boost at 6000 rpm if this is your concern ;)
In contrast you will experience a different vtec feelling, a much more aggressive one, but for this to happen you need to perform some extensive head work and put some necessary bolt ons which adds a lot to the cost...:(

Btw, the Stage 2's for both brands are semi-racing so your drivability won't be affected, and at least my B16B does consume more or less the same fuel as before(only when I drive carefully tho :p)

Also, for both brands and their Stage 2 and above, you must upgrade your valvetrain for safety reasons.

And don't bother for aftermarket valves.......

Spoon cams are mild and overpriced for what you get.

If you are only going for Stage 1's, you won't need to upgrade your B16B valvetrain.

Depending on your c/r and tuning, changing your valves might actually give you a bit more power (due to the higher c/r), but would only change them if you are doing some fine tuning.

Manos ive heard you loose the feel of the vtec changeover when you install cams! Are you saying the opposite? What do you think of the skunk 2 stage 2's?

Generally, the smoother your powerband, the quicker your car will be. This includes optimising the vtec crossover point and in most cases, you won't really "feel" it changover like what you do in a stock setup. You will still "hear" it though.

I think what ManosEK9 means is that, when you are in vtec, it feels a lot more aggressive :)

Again it depends on your setup. Obviously, Toda Spec B will make changover smoother because of their profile, they will add huge torque(for B16 capabilities) where it lacks(midrange). But Skunk2 Stage 2 will do the opposite, i.e add more power where there is already a lot(6200+ rpm) and either conserve the gap or make it even bigger depending also on other mods like exhaust formation.....

That's why is a good idea to get a 4-2-1 header along with Skunk2 S2 and a 4-1 with Toda B.

Oh, and don't think that S2 Stage 2 won't increase midrange as well.....they will but not as much as Toda.

Why I chose S2? Because I'm really addicted to vtec and peak performance as this is where the magic beggins with B-series engines!! Believe it or not, I've tried hard to keep the gap like standard! :nice:

Dont get SPOON cams, you'd better off with Stg1 Toda and Skunk. They both don't need any upgrades/

Will S2 stage1 give me a lot more power in vtec ? i love feeling the vtec kicking in an i would hate to lose it. I dont really want more power in the low and mid range and what other upgrades would i need to get the most from them ?

Their redline is the same as OEM and hence no need for valvetrain upgrades. No need to raise compression either.
I think a decent header and exhaust, along with a set of adjustable cam gears(to set the correct cam degrees) should be enough for you to get the max results. Max results is translated to noticable gains :drive:

Check out the official website of Skunk2, skunk2.com where you can find really useful info including dyno charts......:nice:
