HEY guys, im looking to identify which spoon ecu I need for my DC2. its a jdm 1997. and how do I identify a genuine spoon ecu? are the internals of it different to a oem one? any info would be appreciated. cheers

so it turns out that jdm dc2's 96-00 use the p73-003 ecu. And the uk dc2's use p73-013. spoon have discontinued the p73-013 unit.. on a genuine spoon ecu there are a number of things it should have inside. a spoon sports chip with code 1118 and p73 0030 ver.8. on the out side it should have the spoon sports logo (stamped) on one of the sides and of course the spoon yellow tape. If your unit doesn't have the tape open up the unit to check for the codes. I know iv answered my own question here, but I thought id post this just in case anyone else was curious.

if your dc2 is JDM 1995-2000 then the SPOON ECU will be p73-003..... If its UKDM or EDM 1998-2001 then it will use p73-013

It's not that simple really, there's different ECU's in JDM DC2's from 1995 to 2001.
P73-003 was only found in 95-97 JDM DC2.

Mine is a 2000 EDM DC2 and I checked, it's a P73-G01.
I bought a Spoon P73-023 ECU, which came of a 2000-2001 JDM ITR.

there are different variations of oem ecu for any Honda depending where u are. but all my info has come from spoon sports and this is the info I was given. Im almost certain ukdm and edm engines are the same but not 100% . the only 2 variations of spoon ecu I know about for the dc2 is the p73-003 and p73-013

They probably just take the newest jdm ecu available from Honda, so older ones are P73-003/013 and newer ones P73-023.
Once they've been tuned by Spoon I don't think there's lots of difference between the three versions.

This is mine, like I said it's a 023 with the original seals still intact so hasn't been tampered with.

Any more details on spoon ecu for b18c ?
where is vtec point, rev limit, any launch control or swift light available ?

Vtec is around 5K, rev limit is 9k. no launch control or shift light. Its just a generic upgraded ECU with a map more suited to a mildly tuned engine. Similar to like of Mines and Blits ECUs you can get for Nissans , Mitsubishis etc.

Ideally is a ECU tuned to the specifications of your engine and mods.
I've heard good and bad things about the Spoon ECU, I just bought one because I'm curious. If I don't like it I'll just sell it again.

Mate has a DC2 which was already fast with just the usual bolt ons/exhaust system. Bought a Spoon ECU a few weeks ago and the car is just mental now.
Goes much faster and it's so much more aggressive. It's running a bit too rich though, flames shoot out from time to time and he only gets about 350km with a full tank.
I've also heard of EK9's/DC2's running on Spoon ECU's with perfect air/fuel ratio.

There's lots of people running bolt ons on stock ECU's and they run fine, so I do think it's an upgrade for any Honda with bolt ons.
It's definately not perfect though, but it might be worth the shot if you find a cheap one.

best bang for buck over hondata on a b series motor with just bolt ons in my opinion !!! you don't need anything more unless your planning a big power build, vtec comes in at 5500rpm but im sure its the same for all the spoon ecu's on R engines. i think for the b16a and a2 it comes in at 4500rpm but not sure... and yes ek4sure your spot on, the maps are going to be pretty much the same with the different range of dc2 ecu's but it is advised to use the correct unit for your engine as the slight difference in maps can make the engine run rich or lean. This is why you here of people saying bad things about them, most of the time not all of the time someone used the wrong unit for their motor and its only going to end one way. I wouldn't risk it personally, its best to check which ecu you need before you commit yourself to buy one, as long as your 100% you cant go wrong.

im not talking new, you can pick up a second hand spoon ecu for around the £300 mark for a dc2.. If you wanted a new unit then id say go hondata

''Vtec is around 5K''

'' vtec comes in at 5500rpm ''

so where is vtec point ? :meet:
both guys have the spoon ecu & vtec point it's in different rpms becouse of the different spoon versions ?
or those ecu's have really worked out the vtec point transition to be so smooth by spoon mechanics that is hard to hear anymore and you feel only a smooth pull on these rpms?

I thought the spoon ecu's had a bespoke map for the original buyer of the ecu?
Therefor unless you have the exact same spec as the original owner of the ecu your tune is less than optimal.
Socket p28 and a tune on that is more worth while imo.

Not too mention the fuel they have in Japan being abit better than ours.
