Have decided to tackle spraying the front and back bumper as well as a wing and side skirt. The paint, thinners and hardener is on its way. Have a compressor and all that. Just looking for some tips on the actual painting. Never sprayed anything with an air gun before, just aerosol. Any help would be greatly appreciated

first of all prep it properly.

once you prime it wet sand the primer down to a 600 grit until its super smooth. some people use 800 grit but 600 works well for me.

basecoat is pretty basic to paint and you shouldnt have any problems. how ever.

1 light coat to tack, then 2 wet coats with a 50/50 overlap. if its metalic paint, give it a dust coat just after the 2nd coat (this allows the metallic flakes to stick to the paint instead of laying flat giving a better finish)

the clear coat.

same as the basecoat 1 quick light coat, straight followed by a wet coat 50.50 overlap.

15-20 wait then 2nd wet coat. the key with clear coat is to give the gun plenty of air if using a HVLP gun.

- take your time, cant rush paint
- if it goes wrong dont worry its sandable and redoable
- clear coat is prob gona be ur biggest challenge to achieve without *orange peel*
- if it is a little orange peel, not to worry,1500 and 2000grit with compounds can solve that no problem.
- if you get a run on the clear same as above dont worry, as long as it aint ran the basecoat you can sand it down and buff it, never notice it.
- use plenty of panel wipe before laying the basecoat, reactions are a F*****
- and make sure to tack the basecoat before clearing the panels.

Anything else just ask mate.

Hope this helps.

Great and well detailed info!

Ive been a painter and sprayer for 10 years and would have loved to have given you some good advice but Nuno@MER has stolen my thunder  nice detialed answer tho dude :nice::nice::nice:

I would also use a grey scotchbrite to prep all the shiney edges etc so its cant flake off

here is a link to the item on ebay , thats for a full pack of 10 tho

cheers lads, really helpful. i will put up some pics when its all finished, i was told im lucky its white as is easy to paint. thanks again

And make sure to read the datasheet, the clear-coat often has a time window in which it must be applied following the base-coat or you can have problems later on.

i have a couple of bumpers to do soon so may make a detailed write up from start to finish.

Nuno.
