Strange cooling problem...

Sounds like you may have cracked the block or head.
If it wouldnt start when warm due to lack of compression but did when cold it would suggest the crack has closed up when cooled down.

Such a shame, I hope you can salvage as much as possible
 
I've seen/owned a b18c block that had multiple hairline cracks in the liner and one large one that went all the way through to the coolant gallery.
I highly doubt that's your issue though.

Let's hope it's something simple like that and nothing expensive has been damaged.
 
Cracking a block is quite abit of damage though. The block I mentioned dropped a valve at the rev limiter and put a hole straight through a forged piston, so shows the type of impact that needs for the cylinder wall to crack.
Fingers crossed you bud, I've got afew spares but I'm not sure they'll be any good to you.
