Hi there,

Im currently having transmission problems (I have a 1997 civic sir hatchback).

Today while driving along I selected 3rd gear, but when I let the clutch pedal back out, it remained stuck to the floor. I managed to limp home in third without changing gear.

When home I tried to select a gear but there is no pressure on the clutch pedal and I cant select any gear. You have to put your foot behind the clutch pedal and pull it back up once you press it.

It will go into all gears when the engine is off.

Any ideas on whats wrong would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks for reading.

I had exactly the same problem on way back from work yesterday except i had to make it 20 miles on motorway rush hour traffic. Not nice! I'd check for leaks from slave and master cylinder 1st or bleed the clutch to see if it gets any better. Failing that, i'd go for clutch pressure plate fault. Thats whats up with mine i think. Gearbox is coming out tomoz so will find out then. Have u noticed any unusual rattle or rumbling from bay area?

Thanks for the reply,

I had a quick check along the clutch piping there and there are no leaks.

I was hoping that maybe something came loose on the clutch connection into the gearbox itself but I have a feeling it may be the pressure plate or something internal :((

It was making a funny noise for a long time like a worn bearing noise which got louder as the speed increased so maybe this had something to do with it. I thought it was wheel bearings but they didnt seem to be gone.

Is it difficult to remove the gear box? does the subframe have to be removed?

Same here mate. Mines got a horrible rumbly noise. Noise suddenly appeared after clutch stuck down. Gearbox is piece of piss on ek. No subframe to worry about. Drain oil, shafts out, mounts off, disconnect wiring, starter out then bell housing bolts and out she comes. Might be a guide online somewhere but it i dont see you encountering any problems

Good news!!! just had another look at the slave master cylinder there now and it is leaking a lot of clutch fluid, the seal must have busted.

 So hopefully a simple fix without all the hastle of removing the gearbox!!!

Yepee :nice:

Will keep you all informed of how it goes, but wont be able to get a replacement now until Monday.

Fitted a new spurious slave cylinder today for €30 and I am back in the game !!!

Changing gear much better now, far crisper and easier. The other slave cylinder must have been on the way out for a while.

Amazing how something so simple can improve the whole driving experience so much.
