Weird Noise at 2.5 (2,500) revs...Help!

Hey everyone,

I'm currently driving a 1.4 Honda Civic EJ9 (00) reg.

Recently there has been a weird noise coming from the front (I presume). The sound of the noise happens at 2.5 (2,500) revs. The best way to decribe this noise is like if it is a plastic bag rattling, thats the type of noise it is.

Can anyone tell me whats wrong with my EJ9 :((.

Very much appreciated..

Sounds like it could be a heatshield rattling, although that would sound more 'tinny' and less 'plastic bag' like...

Have you checked the heatshields round the front brakes? I seen those start to rattle a few times. Failing that , be worth checking the heatshields along the exhaust tunnel

EDIT: Have you also checked your exhaust for leaks? I guess that could sound kinda like a plastic bag getting blown about...

I have this, but is definately more metallic. Has been found to be the heatshields rattling.

@ Jokeshopbeard - Yea you could say it sounds like a 'tinny' noise.

@ Kozy - Where are the heatshields located? And also how do I prevent it from making that 'tinny/plastic bag' noise?

On HondaCivicforum a member told me it is the cover for the manifold, is that what you call the heatshield?

There are several heatshields around the car, in my experience those that tend to suffer most from producing these kind of noises are those behind the front brake calipers.

There is also the manifiold heatshield and several under the car that run along the length of the exhaust tunnel

In order to stop these noises sometimes they just need to be tightened or bent slightly. Have a look and see if anything seems loose

Where are the heatshields behind the front brake calipers?

I think they mean this:

I had the same problem its the bracket on the exhuast mani the one which holds it to the engine block. Mine had fractured and then broke its not worth a new mani so i just removed the bit under the bolt and hey presto no more noise il put a pic up later if you need it. Its the cast iron in our country it fails at rust.

The noise happended at exactly this rpm when engine braking so im sure this is what it is for you to.

Il put a photo up at just after five when work finishes. It will explain all and trust me this is the noise causer if you go look at it after i show you where it i will eat my hat if its not cracked in some way.

Ok check the left photo for location.

Then in the right photo you can see whats missing, there was a small piece of metal and a bolt there holding the mani to the block. Mine was rateling for ages before i found it.

I removed the shard and bolt as my EJ9 has done 132,000 miles and i cant be arsed to buy a new mani for an old car plus im saving for a new one.

If you remove the mani and the piece im sure you could weld it back on after a clean up of the surfaces with a file.

Up to you new mani or weld it back on or do what i did throw it either way the noise will stop.

Hope this helps !! :nice: !!

@ rvm - Fantastic photo buddy, a great help!

@ jokeshopbeard - Sorry to sound like a Real Noob but what is a decat? Something to do with the exhaust though right?

@ Ben_Anderson™ - Damn buddy! Your the sh*t!! lol I'll have a look at that tomorrow and let you know if mines is missing. If it is, your one sick dude!! =P

De cat is a pipe that replaces the Cat m8 depending on what one you have it can make a Raspy/tinny noise but i expect you still have a cat on if your running a D serries 1.4 coz there ant much point in fitting a de cat IMO.

Check where the photo said for a crack in the metal mine was cracked right through hence the rattle.

Oh I see, a decat.

I've got an exhaust on it if thats what you mean. I've got a TopGear exhaust on it. Pretty decent.

I'll post images of my EJ9 after. (Past down from my brother - Otherwise I would of done it JDM but don't get me wrong, its still nice =D)

Here's the image of my car...

Just checked my heatshield for the manifold but i didn't see any missing metal parts.

@ Ben_Anderson™ - My manifold is still in contact. Theres no missing bolt or metal part keeping it stable. I still have it on and I tried to wobble my cover today but didn't seem loose whatsoever.

Help =(...

The best thing i can sugest is to get a mate to rev your engine whilst you stick your head in the engine bay or around the car try and narrow down where it is and we should be able to let ya know what it is.

Shame it wasent mani would have been alot easier lol.

mines different.....doesnt happen on engine braking...happens when u apply the loud pedal :( . which make me think it a gearbox/clutch/flywheel problem. doesnt happen when its out of gear either.
