I think this is the right area to post

Has anybody changed their windscreen on there ek9? Mine has a huge crack in it! I need some advice as I don't know what to do about it, I would like an original ek9 windscreen as I've heard their lighter (thinner glass) than the normal civic... Has anybody gone through insurence? Do they source an original? I don't know how to go about it considering they're £400+ new

Thanks in advance

Ash

I wanted to replace mine too but I'm not sure if they even make windscreens for ek9 anymore and if they did you would most likely need to get it delivered from Japan! Don't see it being cheap though.. Did you go with a mainstream insurer or one of those specialist ones? Mainstream one will probably look at your civic and see that it's worth £200 and write it off

;/ really stuck to be honest! I haven't done anything yet, wanted other people's advice

I know the windscreen can be bought from Honda but no idea if they're still made. @Boyle should be able to let you know for sure.

Insurance should technically replace the screen like for like but I have also had concerns should I need a new screen that they'd want to dump a uk spec screen in there. The only real way to know is to ask.

First - lighter windscreen is a myth, the part number is exactly the same for all JDM EK models, even EK2 shopping cart. Second, the price from Honda I'd expect to be even higher, it's not just the glass you also need the molding as it is glued to the windscreen and doesn't come off easily. The price in Japan (UK prices are always higher) is around 100000 yen for the glass and molding, this equals to roughly £650. EK9 windscreen has a green tint to it, so try to find a similar one!

Yes, the only difference are the manufacturer and tint.

There are two manufactures in japan, AP Tech and Asahi.

There are two colors of windscreen and glass in Japan depending on trim levels:

M2H3 - green tint
M2L3 - clear

So always verify the codes on the glass.

I think some insurance companies tend to replace windshields with a Pilkington item. Not sure if they're decent quality?

My new screen is a "safetec" or something like that.

Pilkington developed the method by which all modern glass manufacture is carried out.

They also have had many innovation in HUD etc.

Proper company for sure.

Also, the code should be AS1, not AS2 for windscreens. AS2 is tempered glass instead of laminated and is not allowed for windscreens (at least in the US), only other windows. My OEM EK9 windscreen is an AP Tech and has a green tint, though it has a different color code:

Btw, mine looks a bit darker than normal as I've had it lightly tinted.

I was trying to show the manufacturers and codes of colors. Those are indeed came off windows, not front windscreen. The one you got there is front windscreen made by AP Tech, some ek9 have Asahi depending on chassis number.

Yes, I was just trying to add further clarification. Strange that the color codes are different between the windows vs the windscreens, I would think that they'd be the same. Also, it was only the early EK9s that had Asahi correct?

Indeed, and it makes sense to have different color codes. The privacy glass , dark tinted, has different color code too M2L3.

In Japan you will see a mix of Asahi and AP TECH in a vehicle.

I've been wondering about replacing the windscreen too, got 4 chips in it and am waiting for something big to hit it and crack it leaving me with the dilema of getting the right glass!

Interesting... I'll have to look at my other windows just for curiosity's sake.

I somewhat recently got my second chip. I had it repaired by my glass guy but I looked into the difficulties of getting a new windscreen as well. He recommended a US spec windscreen and couldn't see that there would be any real difference. He doubted the claim to lighter weight of the OEM one as well. Two differences that I do know of are that the US spec has a VIN# window in the lower left blackout area (he said that this could be blacked out no problem) and that the labeling is on the right side instead of the left side. If and when mine needs replaced I'll most likely be ordering used from a JDM parts supplier or paying a severe premium and going new, direct from Japan. Mainly because I like it saying Honda on it, the labeling on the correct side and it being OEM... and yes, I'm a bit ocd ;). If you're not then I would recommend just getting a local quality replacement. I doubt that most people will notice it not being original, or care.

Just sent you a PM mate, I'm currently sourcing a genuine AP tech one so if we get 2 might be able to save a bit on shipping.

Cheers

I went to replace my screen as it is badly pitted and gives a real cloudy haze when the sun hits it, I told my insurance company it was unsafe and I cant see out of it and they said the excess would be £80, when autoglass turned up the guy said straight away "is it that white one over there? the screen I got has a rain sensor in it, and that's a R reg not a 58 plate"

long and short of it my screen never got replaced!
