Gathering parts for engine rebuild!

Ok so I'm looking at a rebuild of my B16B sometime in April next year but will be accumulating parts before hand. I will be doing the rebuild myself with a friend and the help of a machine shop for the block work.

Reason for this is - the engine burns oil quite rapidly in the high RPMs & barfs out black/blue smoke like a diesel when it's in VTEC.

Been to a specialist who diagnosed the issue as worn piston rings & also scoring/marks in the bores in cylinder 2 & 3.

So I'm gathering together some ideas of where I want this to go as I may as well do everything whilst the engine is out.

I was firstly looking at this gasket kit - Replacement FULL Engine Gasket Kits

Is it any good??

Obviously I will be replacing everything needed.

But I also have some other plans that I'm looking into whilst the engine is out including the possibility of stroking to 1.8 with B18 rods & crank.

As well as -
ACL race bearings
Uprated engine mounts
Uprated cams (Skunk2 or something..)
Sump baffles
Wire Tuck
Lightweight flywheel (Exedy Lightweight Flywheel)
Uprated clutch (Exedy St1 Organic Clutch)
Induction (AEM V2/Injen RD)
Exhaust Manifold (Tegiwa Toda Rep)
Inlet Mani (Skunk2 Pro Series)
Adjustable cam gears

Also look into S300 remapping to tie all components together.

These are just some things I've been considering! Whether they will all happen I will have to see what time and money looks like but as I say, just some ideas. Some will definitely happen!

Any feedback on the above mentioned parts will be appreciated!

Meanwhile I'm replacing my cam belt, tensioner & water pump with OEM parts this weekend as they're due. They should still be good to go back on after the build then!

Will get the head pressure tested etc when the rebuild is under way!

Can't wait to get this started!

Anyone at all got any inputs or advice I could use for this?

I wouldn't bother with the inlet manifold save your money for other parts, you could go for the mugen air box or a rep better than v2 etc.I would also consider some head work porting etc if your trying to get the most out of the engine. Stroking it would be a good idea.

Ok mate whys that? I thought breathing mods were a good thing?

I was also looking at Tegiwa Airbox - forgot to mention that!

Yeah looking into the stroking - is there much to it? Is a different ECU needed or anything to make it work with a different crank?

If you have scratches in your bores then it's likely to need a re bore,
So your going to need oversize pistons, oem oversize pistons are getting hard to get now it seems which is a shame,

Finding a perfect b18 crank is hard now also,

Have you thought about getting a b18c4 bottom end and having it freshly bored with some oversize pct (b16b)or p30 (b16a) pistons and using the b16b head?

Possibly! Could I not just fit oversized rings?

Or aftermarket oversized pistons? I had considered just forging it but idk...

No, oversize rings only work with oversize pistons in oversize bores,

If you were pretty happy with the b16b power but would just like to liven it up a bit but keep reliability then maybe just go for a rebore with oversized oem pistons and refresh the big ends, mains, inspect the oil pump,

That should be reliable then so you could put your money in to head work cams and breathing+ ecu+tune

Have a look at the Skunk2 Ultra Street inlet manifold

Heres the part number for the b16b oversize pistons if you wanted to use them,~
JDM Honda PCT Type R Piston Sets 0.25 Over Size
Item# 13020-PCT-000

Tegiwa do standard size sets for about £275 so expect they could get the oversize for about the same price,*

Also for gasket sets I've used this one before and found it to be good quality, the head gasket is identical to oem,

I had a b16b with b18 crank and rods it was running on a b18r ecu and it was fine.

Right thanks for the input!

I think oversize pistons & rings & putting money into cams etc makes more sense as I love the B16B! Just want a little more poke than it already has & I'll be happy!

I'm still undecided on many things.

I'm looking at Skunk2 Tuner Stage 2 cams ad they're more appropriate than the Pro series for a daily street car with only occasional track use like mine. I'm aware I also need the Alpha Series valve springs & retainers. Also recommends bigger injectors, fuel pressure regulator & and VTEC controller? Are these actually necessary & what size injectors? 750cc? 1000cc?

Finally - if I was to put these Stage 2 cams in myself - I would need remapping with Hondata S300 which I couldn't do myself. So if I put the cams in, then went to a tuner say within a week to have the mapping done, would it be unsafe for the engine to be used with different cams etc without tuning just for a few days?

Im sure the springs and retainers are recommended not needed. Obviously if your spending the money makes sense to swap them out, nothing too stiff though.
You'll be fine to drive the car without mapping, it's only full throttle and vtec you need to avoid. The low cam on the skunk2 are pretty close in spec to the stock ones iirc.

You won't need a vtec controller, they are junk any way,
Your tuner will set the vtec crossover to its optimum point using the hondata, so no need to worry about that,
you won't need a fuel pressure regulator unless you injectors are maxed out on their duty cycle,

you could probably get away with standard injectors if they are serviced and working to their full potential, if not you could use prelude injectors for a bit extra

Use oversized b16b pistons with b18 crank n rods is what i did n mine made very good torque which counts more than chasing power which is pointless with na cars, or concentrate on handling and gearing ie teg final drive in b16b box with good camber set up etc pends if your gnna use for track or just a trophy car like sum people no point in spending the monies if you are not gnna use it!

I'm pretty set on oversized pistons & rings with standard displacement/stroke but just some mods to enhance things a little!

Definitely states that valve springs are required not recommended. Uprated fueling is "recommended". I may just uprate injectors anyway for the sake of doing it.. I'll chat to a tuner about it, see what they say.

Ok Dunx, what size are they & how much? Do I just get the bores done to the size of the oversize pistons & rings then basically?
