yo's take A walk down memory lane, never did I expect to face an old school racer. You might have been ferried around by your parents in this, you might have brought you first date out in this car, you might even remember seeing this zoom past on the roads. A lot of memories start flowing back especially to enthusiasts.

Aaron's Take Although it doesn't look like much from the front, don't be fooled. This Civic EF9 is a tightly packed machine. Its incredible rigidity comes from a treatment of spot welding, doing away with the need for the standard chassis reinforcement bars that many of us are typically guilty of.

Ryo's take Gauges are life indicators, telling you whether your engine is doing well or its going to explode. Instead of the usual Defis, Hongyao went for the Greddy performance gauges which blended well with the interior of the EF9. Old but classic...

Ryo's take As Honda sales drastically increased, another 2 more sales channels were introduced in the 80's to accommodate Japan's sales. Honda Clio is responsible for working in line with the main stream Honda dealerships and Honda Primo had control of sales of the Civics, kei cars and other Honda products.

Aaron's Take To keep the suspension geometry bang on, a payload of handling weaponry was installed to further up the handling ante. Complimenting the Tein HA coilover is a set of MFactory roll centre adjusters, along with customised nylon bushings for the undercarriage and also a customised front traction bar with castor adjustability.

The Civic EF9 SIR gets its stance from a set of Tein HA coilover (F10kg/R7kg) with adjustable pillowball mounts that allows for spreading of its legs for maximum camber adjustability. — with Hongyao Zhuang.

The earlier days of car design was pretty straight forward, making the overall car geometry to be as low to the ground and compact as possible, resulting in having the passengers sit low in the car. It is really a case of 'how low can go you go'.

yo's take The EF9 was the very first Civic chassis to be powered by a B16A VTEC unit, boasting 158bhp. Through its long service, several overhauls were done to keep this old guard working at its tip top condition. -

Aaron's Take Although considered as "old-tech" or primitive by rapidly advancing technology, Hongyao has given modern touches to the 4th generation Civic, such as these Spoon Sports 4-piston front calipers, biting down on customised 2-piece rotors. These, coupled with other stopping necessities that include stainless steel braided brake hoses and upgrades from a Honda Civic EK9; such as its rear brake calipers and rotors give the EF9 immense stopping power.

While the lower tier models of the 4th generation Civic were either equipped with only the D-series motors and were SOHC (Single Over Head Cam), the EF9 received at that time, the DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam) B-series motor, along with state-of-the-art fuel injection and what became Honda's ever-popular proprietor technology; VTEC.

Still, the older EF-series Civic retains much of the original flavour, why many aspiring boy-racers fell in love with it. Today it is still a hot favourite amongst Kanjo-Hashiriya (Highway Racers), who dodge and zip through traffic in their stripped and gutted EFs, making them even more lightweight than ever.

It was definitely no easy task sourcing for a replacement lamp, especially in today's age of stockists, where parts for Civics only come in ES and FD specifications. Truly, we're looking at a connoisseur here. That SIR badge just makes things brighter for Hongyao.

Aaron's Take As far as "Stuff Of Legends" go, this is possibly one of those rides that fit snugly into the leagues of the truly unforgettable automobiles of all times. As one of those vehicles that were heavily favourited by many during the days of rampant illegal racing, the Honda Civic has been labelled as a "... reckless, brutish brat with no regards for the law..." kind of machine. No thanks to its sordid history, many of these no longer exist in our tiny island state, where the piling number of severe crashes in the hands of their new owners and unforgiving COE system dissuaded many from retaining their once-treasured machines. Today however, it took more than just a stroke of luck. A miracle perhaps, if we were to justify this moment, forever frozen in time and image, to remember perhaps, what is the last of its kind here in Singapore...
