My opinion: I think both played well and there wasn't really much between them. I honestly can not say that Spain did not deserve to win. What hurts is not only that Spain had won, but the way that has happened. They both did not make the most of the chances they had. Then there was a series of events that lead to this:
The free kick from Sneijder which should have been a corner, just before Spain scored. It was very obvious. But ok, maybe this wasn't thát essential. However, looking at a whole on the things that followed:
- Heitinga got a second yellow card, while Puyol was worse against Robben (though I think both should NOT have gotten a card; instead of that only Heitinga got the second)
- Elia was blocked, should have been a free kick
- Out of that block, a counter came which should have been a free kick
- Seconds before the goal, it was off side for a Spain player
If there would have been whistled for one of those things, Spain would probably not have scored and it would have been penalties. Maybe we would have won. And if we didn't, at least Spain had won honestly (again: not saying Spain did not deserve it). This whole chain of events triples the grief imho...
Not blaming Spain, but I am blaming the referee...
