3rd gear sync crunch!?

Hi guys,im new on here so id apreciate any help i can get realy :)

Iv got a 1997 ek9 and iv got a huge crunch in the gearbox when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear.. This only happens when in vtec.
Today i went to see a gearbox specialist and he said its my 3rd gear sync worn.. Now he recomended i went to bomex who make the best in build and quality for this sync,they make race gear box's.
Im not looking to spend loads i just want the problem fixed but i want it to last!
Can anybody out there help with my enqiry???

Just get Honda oem parts for your box. Costs roughy 200euro for 3rd,4th gear set. Regular gearbox oil changes and not dogging it through the gears too much will leave your gearbox healthy for a long time.
 
Cheers for your help mate,i noticed i said bomex when i meant kormex..soz.
Now after driving the car more and listening to it im feeling a complete sync change as in from 1st-5th or 1st-4th would do realy..is ebay any good for this kinda thing? has any body had this problem b4 and is there any other way but oem that last coz oem dont seem to and are very expensive!? cheers..

Hi mate i had this problem with my box in my jordan, crunched going into 3rd gear for a start then didn't go in at all! My gearbox was taken out and sent to a specialist but was gonna cost a fortune to rebuild it so i went for a used 98 spec teg box with 4.785 fd and lsd which was £600... hope this helps
 
hay cartney,cheers for that,urm where did u get the teg box then? the thing is that my box is off a low miler ek9 from jappreformanceparts.co.uk,its had this the same problems before i owned it,the previous owner had this box fitted from them,just checked the reciept and its dated 14/05/08,this bugger is 8 months old and has been making the noise for atleast 5 monthes,problem is its out of the 28 day warranty!lol.. i just want a set of descent syncs to go in it..hmmm.
 
oem will do fine you have to remember these cars have taken 10years of dogging and 3rd gear is the hardest change it has to do so it gives up first.and mr spoon recommends changing gear oil pretty much as often as engine oil which most people dont,me included.
 
Whats the best place to get oem parts from,honda direct will cost serious cash..??
 
just if you know someone in a honda garage that will get you the bits costprice.or get a few prices off gearbox rebuild specialists

I did think it was a risk buying a used box as well, but was low mileage box and i'm now gonna change my gearbox oil frequently to avoid the problem again, got mine from tegiwa imports waited a good few weeks on it though.

hi chris i recently had my box refurbed by tgm motorsport,i had to replace 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th gear synchro's,i got the synchro sets alot cheaper through d2mtuning.com,they import oem honda parts straight from honda japan and i payed alot less for them than honda uk prices,i would advise emailing them for a quote,its also best to replace the clutch while the box is off and i expect d2m can get that cheaper aswell:nice:

X2 replacing the clutch is good idea as well i changed mine to exedy stage 1, wasn't much dearer than the oem one.
 
simple, your box needs rebuilding so youll need to buy set of synchros. seals etc (just get oem), no cheap way to do this unfortunately
