when you buy a 4.928 Final Drive what gears does it change? just 5th gear?
also can i just buy a gear set that changes 1-4 gears and leave 5th stock?
and does largers the final drive longer the longer the gear is ?
im really confused at the moment

a 4.928 shortens the ratio of all your gears respectively, mfactory and other companies also offer custom individual gears ie, a short ratio 1,2,3 and normal 4,5 so your car isn't at high revs with normal driving. hope that helps.

thanks so if the final drive is higher like 5 plus does it mean it shortens all the gears even more than the 4.9 one?
thanks

It'll put more torque down to the road at the expense of top speed, but won't shorten the gap between the gears.

do you have a bicycle? you know the way you have gears at the back wheel and gears in the middle where the pedals are? Think of the pedals as your final drive, and the back wheel as your 1-5 gears. If you change gear at the pedals to a shorter ratio (smaller gear) it makes the 5 rear gears shorter. Thats what your doing by installing a shorter final drive in your car. Makes it easier to cycle and you build up speed faster but your going to put more wear on yourself and you wont have a great top speed.

brilliant explanation hah :nice:

Changing the final drive does not shorten your gears.

With a 4.78 or 4.9 your revs will climb quicker so you will accelerate faster, but as you change gear the rev drop will still be the same, (Roughly 2.5k drop in an EK9) so the gears are not shorter.

With a close ratio gear set the revs climb quickly and your rev drop is less, when you change up, depending on the ratios in the kit it could be 1-1.5k typically - so you stay in vtec as you change up.

Both a final drive or gear ratio change will have an effect by lowering your top speed.

If you change the lower gears and leave 5th standard, you will have a big rev drop from 4th to 5th, not good, it leaves the driving feeling flat.

Thats correct.

The final drive has no effect on the gap between gear changes.

Think of it this way. If you upgrade a final drive from 4.4 to 4.7 your top speed in each will be reduced. You lose a bit of speed but gain a bit of acceleration.

The EK9 has a pretty high top speed (over 250 kph isn't it?), which is pretty useless because trust me you'll need one hell of a straight to hit that. So why not drop the top speed down and gain some acceration?

The only other factor and the downside to all of this is it will reduce the speed you will travel at for a certain rev range. Which basically means your engine will be revving slightly higher to mantain 100 kph if you go to a higher final drive.

Its an alright modification. Cheaper then a close ratio gear kit. But close ratio is far superior. I went from a 4.2 final drive to a Spoon 4.8 and it was a good upgrade but will soon be going to a close ratio setup which will be alot better.
