What's up everyone. My name's Chewy. I'm from the DMV area and as the title states, twenty years later, I bought and EK. When I got into the scene, I was always attracted to Hondas in general. They're small, light, purpose built cars and with bit of time, thought, spit, a bloody knuckle or two and as fist full of curse words, you can have an extremely fun car for and extremely low investment. This is especially achieved when you do a lot of the work on your own and you look for deals. I started off with an 89 Nissan 240sx. This was long before drift tax and "Hella Flush". This was the genesis of drifting in the United States. I was collecting a lot of Hyper-Rev mags back then. Super Street magazines were about and inch thick and Spoon products were stuff of legend. Everyone wanted a Civic Si at that time. I always coveted the Civic Type-R. I like cars that are purpose built especially ones that have been engineered well. Here is an example of what I would like to achieve in the long term but for now I'm starting off with a D-Series engine and transmission combination.

The car is I purchased is a 1996 Honda Civic CX with a manual transmission. What I really like about is the fact that it has manual window controls. It's pretty low frills and it's the base model of this particular family. The car belonged to an old lady who hardly drove it. When her husband died, it just sat for a while. Then it went to a friend of a friend who was going to swap in a B20 low comp and build it for drag purposes. The car came pretty much disassembled. Much of the stock D16y7 engine had been removed already in regards to the accessories like the exhaust manifold, distributor and other items I was going to sort through and replace anyway. Initially, I was going to build a "Mini-Me" consisting of a Y7 bottom end and a Y7 top end. The current top end was said to have issues so I've been procrastinating on cracking open the head to see what's the what. In certain circumstances I can be a bit of a purist and I like working with what is already in the car. I don't like typical builds as I want whatever I do, to be unique among the packs of replicas. I guess that's just the artist in me. Subtle is my style. I appreciate clean "Kanjozoku"-esque builds, that again, have a single purpose which is to drive the wheels off of it. I digress.

I'm selling the B20 to a friend who wants it for a crazy DA build. In exchange, I get a bit of his Honda knowledge which will be a great help because his stuff is crazy and I need that kind of crazy in my life. The D16 will go to the scrap yard sans-transmission and I'll be using said transmission again with the D15B 3 Stage Vtec also known as Dual Stage that I purchased of Friday. For my first Honda build, this will be a fun engine. I've done considerable research and since this is going to be a budget build, the low cost of the engine was also a plus. I expect to get into the 160hp range when all is said and done. I plan to take to to HPDEs and other sorts of racing. I figured this would really be a good car to learn on. I'm also not planning to drive it all the time as I have a daily and another car for grind purposes. That being said, I'm okay with some replica exterior items in the case that they get damaged at the track or on the street. Eventually as my skills climb, so will the quality of the exterior aero. I've learned along the years to work smarter and plan ahead. I sunk 10K into my last car and didn't really gain any benefit and lost interest as a result. It was a haphazard attempt but beneficial as now I know what NOT to do. You live and you learn.

What I'm working with:

Vehicle: Red 1996 Honda Ciivc CX Manual Hatchback
Milage: 101K
Engine: 1996-2000 JDM D15B 3 Stage or "Dual Stage" VTEC engine
Transmission: 1996 Honda Civic CX 5 Speed Manual Transmission
Exhaust Manifold: DC Sports Headers - 4-2-1 Two Piece (Ceramic)
Intake Manifold: TBD (Still researching)
CAI: TBD (Still researching)
Exhaust: Yonaka Catback Exhaust
Coilovers: Yonaka
Brakes: 1 Step over stock (TBD)
Rotors: Stock replacements
Brake Lines: Stainless upgrade
Wheels: Sparco ASSETTO GARA Gold Painted
Size: 17x7.5 Offset: 45mm
Seat: TBD (I may get an NRG Bucket while I save for the CTR Recaros *drool*
Interior: A mix of custom and OEM CTR accessories *Alcantara*
Steering Wheel: TBD

These are just the basics as of now. The wheels came with the car. I will eventually go to 16's but for this iteration of the build, I'll use what I got with it until I have acquired the wheels that I actually want. I'm a huge fan of RegaMasters and i'm on the lookout. They're just a classic wheel in my opinion. Not gaudy but tough. I also like that meaty tire look. Thanks for checking out my thread. There will be more to come later. I have already started replacing parts such as the headlights, hood, fenders, taillights and other items. These are, again, just part of the 1st phase of the project. At this point I just want to get cleaned up and running. Then the details with start to fall in line.

Cheers!!

As of now, these are the follow parts the I've purchased and why.

s-l1600 (1).jpg
The lower ball joint on the passenger side knuckle was toast. I purchased this kit because it was cheap and would work in the interem while I collect the parts that I want.

s-l1600 (2).jpg
My hood was toast so I bought a BNIB OEM replacement. I eventually want to go CF but for now this is good.

s-l1600 (3).jpg s-l1600 (4).jpg
Since the priority is getting the car running, I chose low cost options for the headlights and taillights. This is just to keep things moving forward in a logical fashion.
s-l1600 (5).jpg
Buying new fenders was a no brainer. Again, these parts may be changed based on what I buy in the future.

Here is the D15B that I purchased. It's really clean. I'll see what's the what when it's in my hands on Friday!

I am currently researching axles. I've been on Kingmotorsport looking at replacements. I still have to get many other parts. The search continues!!

Ok... sooooooo... bollux!!! I F#*KED UP FAM!! lol So when I went to purchase my motor, I had the D15B 3 Stage vtec in mind. I found one for 1100 with the transmission. In my logic I'm like. well I have a working transmission so all I need is the long block right? Right. SO I found another D15B but in my excitement, I skipped right past the part that said " D15B NON VTEC". FFFFFFAAAAAAKKK!!!! LOL.. So I get the engine delivered and I'm super excited. I'm looking around for evidence of vtec anything.... Nope.. No vtec.. nope nope nope!! So what are we going to do now? Make lemonade out of these lemons. I could return the engine and get the one I want but then I have to spend $200ish + to ship it back. Bump that!! That's just giving away free money. In hindsight. it saves me money in the long run. I was going to get a cam and other internals for the 3 Stage so instead I can keep those funds for the K swap. I went ahead and purchased new mounts, headers, exhaust and coilovers. The exhaust can be used again with the K series. I'll make something back off the headers. So all it all, it is what it is. Lesson learned for sure!! READ EVERYTHING CLEARLY!! HAHAHA

I got replacement OEM mounts as I didn't think this engine warranted buying HASport or something of the like. I'll wait on the K for that

I got Yonaka Full Coilovers. All of the reviews I've read have been quite favorable. I look forward to trying them out.

I got Yonaka Catback Exhaust. Again, the reviews were good and the videos I've watched sound really good.

I got Megan Racing Header & Downpipe. This was a cheap option based on my needs and the fact that I don't want to put too much into this engine. I'll get some of the money back when it's time to sell it on.

Once I get all my stuff I'll post pictures.

Now to look for some interior fabric. My headliner was attacked by pterodactyls.

Cheers,

Chewy
