Hello Guys,

I ordered a set of 83mm pistons from Toda with some liners, but as a result of some language barriers, Toda decided to just send me some pistons with no liners and a little note saying please send your block back to Japan for us to fit the liners (thanks Toda)

So having spoken to a couple of tuners I have 2 options:

1. Use the set of 83mm pistons with the Darton sleeves which will give me about 1900cc (already got a spoon stroker kit) giving me more torque and a bit more power, but will lower the compression ratio compared with option 2. Also there’s the cost of this set up.

2. Use a set of 82mm Toda/Jun pistons which will give me 60cc less than option 1, a little bit less power, less torque but a higher compression ratio, but increased compression makes more power any way. The plus side is this set up will have more revs to play with.

Have been told by a tuner that option 2 would better as the B16b engines work better with a higher compression ratio and that this would work better with my Jun stage 3 cams. But I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to squeeze every last bit of power out of their engines, right guys.

Which set up does everyone think will work better on a B16b lump and what sort of difference in power and torque will both set ups have? This is for a track car by the way.

first set of advise i can give u is dont use darton sleeves. go aebs, golden eagle, or rs machine if your gonna sleeve they have the best track record for reliable sleeves. darton's are known for sinking. i have read horror story's 6 years ago about them sinking and i have seen tons of issues from then till now with them so in my opinion i would stay they hell away from them.
if your running 82mm currently on stock sleeves your already pushing it. im guessing u cant return the kit? what cc domes are the pistons your currently running and what cc domes come with the toda kit? also both pistons stock compression height(30mm)? sometimes more compression doesnt mean more hp, it can actually hurt u depending on what cams your running so if u can provide your piston specs u can get better advise.

Darton sleeves were just a recommendation from Toda as the best fitment instead of the liners they forgot to send me. I'm currently running on the standard pistons with the Jun stage 3 cams and a spoon stroker kit. Will have to look up the cc domes of both pistons and compression heights.

i was thinking about your post today when i was at work and me personally would stay away from darton sleeves cause all the negative stuff i have seen from them but it really comes down to who's installing the sleeves. you really need to find a good machine shop that knows what there doing with any sleeve job. i have personally sleeved a b18a block with aebs t sleeves and had great results but i am starting to think that the machine shop i used made the difference not the sleeve brand so hopefully u have a machinist by u thats got some good experience under is belt.
by standard pistons u mean jdm itr pistons or pct pistons?

Hi Han, Tom has told me of the build, language barrier causing some major problems! Hope things get sorted soon. Looking forward to hearing about the Kaaz ratios :D

Been a bit of a nightmare sourcing parts. Pistons and gear ratios were ordered back in January and they only just came in last week. Parts are a lot more expensive now coming from Japan because of the strength of the £, or should I say lack of, so trying to source cheap parts hasn't been easy either.

Haitch not too sure if this was you but did you give me a tow from Brands about a year and half ago maybe 2 after my clutch decided to give up on me?

Can anyone else shed a bit of light with their knowledge and experience??

Seems there are not many members who have pushed their builds as far, try a PM to 'Team Diesel', who has tried some variations. Or Bliinx & MFactory.

dome cc's? on the 2 options of pistons. im no serious expert but i have a few different builds under my belt. u never answered on what pistons u are currently running. stock bore? your option 1 costs double of what option 2 costs cause of the sleeves so if your willing to spend money and sleeve it why would option 2 be even an option? theres no negative part of running option 1 over option 2 except the price difference as long if everything is installed right. whats the compression info? i cant imagine u bought a set of pistons without knowing what cc domes it came with.
