hi lads,

im currently building my b20.

ive taken delivery of my engine from my builder and i have a quick

question about the timing marks.

upon picking it up he said the block was at TDC and the valve clearances were

set...

today ive put the pumps on and was test fitting the belt when i noticed the

marks were slightly out..

am i right in what im sayin though, it is out isnt it?

he has over 20+ years experience and dont understand why he would say it

was set when it wasn't.

told me to be careful not the adjust the gears before the belt is on or my valves

will crash

Its only out a tooth at the crank , its grand they tend to move without the belt on , just line them up , fit the belt and rotate it..

By adjusting the gears he means adjusting the cam timing on the cam gears , dont touch them

surely both cam gears need to be completely vertical for it to be at tdc as well!

yours look to be 5-10 degrees out?

grand, so put the crank bolt back on, give her a turn and line it up?

also it be alright to pull the cam gears off the cams?

i need to get the timing cover on and my gears are in the way.

stupid questions just dont wanna take any chances

There is key ways on the cams so can't go wrong putting them back on

yup i know, woodruff keys like the crank pully,

but if i try turn the bolt open is there a possibility of spinning the cam itself?

if your taking the cam gears off you need to lock the cams in place via the holes along the cam plate.

you will need a DUAL CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT SPROCKET HOLDER, google them. they're around £30-50

will i bring the engine back down or reset the gears to zero?

dont wanna reset them if he has them set already.

Well was he meant to have degree'd the cams in as per skunk2's instructions? or just timed them up at zero?
