B20 VTEC or H22?

I'd avoid B20 also mine ate the bottom end took the head off and found head gasket blowing between cylinders and N°2 cylinder cracked in 2 places

Top of the cylinders are bad for vibrating at the added revs of a vtec conversion to build one properly that will last takes some serious cash

I'd agree with the rest B18C the difference between that and B16 is night and day!

I know you said you didn't want boost, I can understand why but at low pressure they still drive very much like they do n/a, just more power.
Low pressure is also more reliable and parts can be had cheap if you know where to look.

I'll have my manifold up for sale soon and it won't be expensive(like £50)
The only reason I'm not after boost is because of the other half :angry2: This engine previously ran a Vortech Supercharger, but that gave up the ghost due to extreme misfortune. She's apprehensive about me blowing thousands on something that's potentially unreliable. Trying to explain that it's all in the mapping hasn't worked so far! But I think by explaining the negative press the B20 has received so far has weakened her resolve somewhat

Honestly I'd put a b20vtec as the least reliable option available lol no doubt some run fine but some isn't good enough is it lol
What engine you got now? Problem with boost is the temptation for more "easy" power.
literally all my issues I've had where down to my own doing.

The good ol' B16a2. It ran reliably at 270bhp for years until the 'charger went. Tbh if I were to go down the boosted route, I'd be expecting to see about 300ish and be happy with that. I've seen lots of good reviews about the Go-Autoworks kit so it would be a toss up between that and the Race-tech, as I'd imagine they would work out roughly the same after shipment and tax.
But yeah, the temptation to whack up the boost and ignore the internals could be a problem :drive:

Not sure how reliable they are at 300hp but not like a b16a2 is hard to find or expensive...

I enquired about the race tech kit and cost came down to 1500, not sure how much auto works would cost you.

Yeah Jesse, if the bugger blows up I'll just get a c4! Damn sight cheaper than the 3k Vortech wanted to replace the charger! Also, thanks for your help :)
Encore, how did you manage that one? The art of negotiation?

I called up Ricky at Race-tech just for information about turboing my mates B18c4 and was quoted 1500-1600 for a kit to run 350bhp. This was a few months ago mate maybe give him a call see what he says. My mate never ended up buying it just stuck with n/a.

Go-auto street kit is probably about that but it comes with a new turbo, not a recon one.
Cast manifold though so pros and cons

The H22A7 in the ATR was decent, but I always felt it would be so good in a lightweight chassis such as EK. Don't forget about your gearbox and overall gearing either - get this spot on and you could be going even quicker.

My totally standard B18C with good bolts on and a remap made 209bhp and 152.4ft/lbs which is very good for a b series with only bolt ons and it felt pretty torquey for what it was. @Saqib was in the car around knockhill, he can vouch for how well it went :nice:

Logan's B18C'd Jordan went very well round Knockhill. It's probably worth bringing @Vtec6000 over here to map it whichever engine you pick.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Seems I've been given the go ahead to build a turbo kit. Just a case of deciding what kit to use! I'd love to get Vtec6000 over to map it but there's a long way to go before that. It's sat unmoved for nearly 3 years :/

B20 vtec engines can certainly be hit and miss. On the block itself, the cylinder walls are pretty thin, they have no oil squirters(there is pro's and con's to having these), the B20 crankshaft is not "fully counterweighted" like the b18cR crank so harmonics may become a issue at high rpm's, they also lack a block girdle. Some have said the stock b20 oil pump is different to any of the B vtec engines but if you cross reference the part numbers, it is the same pump listed.

Knowing the weak points and addressing them should greatly improve the reliability of the engine. I plan to build a b20-vtec engine this year, it will be for R&D purposes and will more than likely be tested in both my road car and a track car to test it's reliability in various environments. I won't be sleeving the block as I want to try some other methods of reinforcing the stock sleeves.

As for a H22 conversion, unless doing a H2B I wouldn't even consider it and even then personally a h22 would be low on my list of engines to swap in!

What was you thinking anghous?
Cylinder support systems or something in the states offer basically a fancy block guard.
I've heard of "wedging" or "pegging" cylinder walls aswell in other tuning circles.

Yeah the idea of a swap is out the window. Now it's a case of deciding what turbo kit :)

A CNC'd block guard is what I will be going for.

Go-Autoworks or Spoolin Performance, both offer good quality products. What's your budget for turbo kit?

Never heard of the latter tbh! For the turbo kit itself, probably up to 1800ish. Naturally any saving will be welcome! Will all depend on how negotiations go with my work shortly
