I have seen a car i really really want although the seller has lost the V5, and said he has sent off for the a new one of which he paid aorund £25 for, Also he is quite a trusted member on civic life from what i gather and plans certain meets, i do not want to name names, however everything i have asked him to supply me with he has happily done so. The seller has some old MOT's and some service history, i have HPI and vin no. checked the car everything has came up clean, So the thousand dollar question is, if i get a hand written receipt signed by myself and the seller, and as much ID and proof of who is and where he lives, would it be ok to buy it with out a V5??

I have googled it and some people sayy NO!!! and some people say yeah as this means that and it doesn't prove this. So thought i'd ask you guys, any info would be appreciated. thanks lee.

It sounds as though you really want the car. Why don't you play it safe, give the seller a nominal deposit and agree to pay the remainder and finalise the deal when they recieve the replacement V5? If he or she is fair than I couldn't see a problem doing it this way. At the end of the day there is nothing wrong with playing cautious. Good luck

I do i do!! Although the seller is a good 150 miles away from my house, and also i have no car at the moment, so i'm not gunna lie i don't want to wait. Cuz catching the bus is treacherous! Oh and he has applied for the V5 back. Well so he has told me.

Yeah defo play it safe :) not worth all the hassle just for a couple of weeks
^ as said leave a deposit, if the seller has nothng to hide or worry about then they won't have a problem with this
good luck with all of it :D

HMMMMMM. I'm so undecided its unbelievable. cheers for the helps though lads ;)

I'm selling a car that has no V5 (applied 2 weeks ago as my mate lost it before selling it to me and still hasnt arrived.....can take up to 6 weeks although 2 weeks is the norm) and I have stated in my advert that if a deposit is left, I will hold the car until the V5 arrives so everyone is happy. It is a tricky one and down the personal preference and how well you know/trust the seller!

Not gunna lie I don't know the seller at all, and he did tell me the first time I spoke to him about the car about the v5, and knowin that I was comin from so far away most people would say when the buyer went to view the car if they were to mug some one off, and as I've said he's a very active, and from what I can gather trusted member of civic life, and evrything I've asked him for he's supplied, so I think I might just go for it. I have a list of paperwork that I would like to see first, for reassurance. And have written up a receipt that needs his names address and signature filled in, with the vin and reg of the car, it clealry states that he is the registered owmer and keeper of the car before the sale. I have no reason to not trust and seems quite genuine, but as they say trust no one.

Play it safe IMO - I had a load of trouble when this happened - the seller was genuine but had 'forgot' to send the application off, even though he said he already had. Ended up taking months to sort out!
