hi, im 19 in the south of england looking at buying a vti.
i just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on what to look out for when buying one. i havn't got alota knowledge when it cums to ek's so i would be greatful for anything you could give.
i have already been to look at one, looks very tidy, all underneath is very clean and in good condition, feels nice to drive, cams kicked in nicely etc. got lots of history with it, totally standard except a 4-1 header.
iv herd that they should come with a master key?? do they, and of so how important to the car are they?
thanks. ali.

Hi, I got an ek4 vti when i was 19 as wel, great car! only problem i ever had with mine was one of the rear brake calipers seized up so i'd recommend checkin that the brakes have been serviced as in pads+discs. this is prob common sense to ya tho, oh and regular oil changes are a good sign. as for the master key mine did come with one. its just like the normal key only the plastic on it is red. ya only need it if ya lose the original key i think honda use it to make another key for u.

hope this helps, lucas.

ok thanks i will be sure to check the brakes. the car looks asif it has has lots of regular oil changes which is good. and although it doesn't come with the red key it has 2 spare normal one anyway so not to worry. cheers.

another thing i have thought of is with the b16a2 how come some seem to have a red rocka cover and some black?? does it mean anything?

Red is from a type r b16b engine or b18 and black is from b16a series. Some people spray em or just buy the rocker cover. Look out for oil leaks around the engine. And generally what other things u would look for history damage etc.

Top stuff mate thanks, i'll bare that in mind. well that puts my mind at rest about the rocka covers :)

No probs mate. Good luck hope u find a decent one. Don't know if u have seen the ek4 sir on here for sale? With cage. Contemplated selling my own ek4 sir for it just cus it looks quality!

they are pretty decent cars, there isnt really anything wrong with them - just normal wear and tear things. Make sure it compression tests evenly, has had some kind of regular service and jack it up and spin the wheels to find sticky callipers. Dont let mileage put you off, they really do go on forever.

bring a ball-point pen wit u next time u luk at it and get under it and jab around under it - if der rust da pen wil eiter go through it of it wil feel soft , lots of civics can suffer rust and people spray over it 2 try cover it

Also a 19yr old EK4 Driver, replaced the rear calipers on mine aswell so watch for them. get your hands under the rear arches and check for rust.

ok thanks for the advice people. iv had another look at it 2day, everything seems to be up to scratch. the only little niggleing things i could find were that the engine sounded slightly more tapity then i expected, having said that i have nothing to compare it too. (oil level was fine tho). and when ticking over, there was a slight sort of humming which went away when you put the clutch down, the bloke said could just be the cluch release bearing? it was hardely noticable though tbh. other than that it is spot on.

If the noise stops when the clutch is pressed it will more likely be the gearbox and not the clutch but it depends what sort of noise and how bad it is.

Vtecs can sound rattely itscalled valve tick could do with the valve clearances checking or lmas doing. Can just be normal though!

iv decided today to leave this particluar one and keep looking, its got a few things fishy about it so to avoid gettin caught out im just gonna try find another one. cheers though, and if anyone is or knows a good ek4 goin then please give me a shout.
