I am just timing my newly built engine back up ready to plonk it in, in a week or so...

The question I have is, if I have both cam gear marks at TDC (pointing straight upwards) and the crank lined up with the mark on the block, I find that the teeth on the cambelt are'nt able to meet up correctly (see pic)..

In order to sort this I have to move the cams either one tooth to the right or to the left.

Does anyone know if this a common situation, or it is safe to effectively time it up a tooth to the right or left? Because obviously this will put the whole timeing out???

*b16a2 engine and im using JDM itr cams, and a oem cambelt....

Crank lined up....

Any advice appreciated

Just pop the lower cover and pulley on the crank and line it up there. Remove covers again and fit belt.

You have got the correct belt haven't you. The B series and Type R are not the same.

I havnt yet put the crank pulley on and lined it up, didnt see any point as the initial tdc marks were already lined up.

This engine i have just rebuilt came from joe on here, the belt was purchase and fitted on the engine for very few miles, so it has to be the correct one....i will double check with him though. The belt is still next to new condition.

Line up the 2 indents on the cams (exhaust 3oclock) (intake 9oclock) , when they are , both ''up'' marks will lean towards the exhaust side , this is perfectly normal.

Look along the cam cap rails, there is a hole where you can push through a 5mm drill bit and it should slot into recess on cam when the cam is in correct position.

Well I never knew that.

Well now you do:D

See where I have circled, that's where you put the 5mm bit through and providing cams are lined up correctly it will slot into hole on cam.

You can see in this picture where the holes are along camshafts

Did mine yesterday, as Vtec6000 shows I use a couple of bolts to hold cams in place, but the crank never lines up exactly but it's never more than 1/2 a tooth out so you know you at the right place.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I will ensure the cams line up to those marks vtec600 suggested.

If the crank is ok to be 1/2 tooth off then im not worried so much!

Had a fiddle tonight... lined the cam holes up through the cam cap cover with a drill bit...which interestingly set the tdc markings slightly off centre (both a bit to the left). The 3 and 9 oclock marks lined up also. And to my supprise the belt went on with the crank right on tdc. And all teeth lined up!
Same as before really but im satisfeid with it now I know about the cam holes :)

Belt is now on....cranked over a few times and the tensioner worked its magic....basically good to go now. Bar checking valve clearences.

Better think about bringing my build thread back from the dead!

Thanks again everyone.

Ali.
