Walking towards the car, noticed the hub cab was missing off the passenger side front wheel.

Upon closer inspection I noticed that the nut on the hub in the centre has completely sheared off!!! What the hell??

How it should look as on the drivers side wheel -

How the heck has this happened? I've never ever touched the hubs, not tightened or loosed anything.

Strange one! Never seen cv joint to break like that! Don't drive the car until you change cv joint because you'll damage the wheel bearing

That's unusual and a bit scary! It would probably explain the noise and brake issues you stated in your other thread the other day

Yes the wheel bearing now has play in it causing the disc to touch the stone guard and Caliper

Yeah it's mad! It is scary for sure lol. Well, I limped it home from where I was but don't intend to use it again until its fixed.

Quite possibly, I have had a strange knocking noise from it on full lock for a couple of weeks and of course the brake pedal losing pressure. Its still the same the pedal is, but might change when fixed. Perhaps this CV joint has been on its way out for a while.

The knock was probably the disc hitting something, you'll need to now change the wheel bearing now also.

And I need a new hub cap because its somewhere on the nearby roads :angry2:

I'm K-swapping it in under a month... Might just leave it until then tbh. But then I need to actually get the car to where its being done :/ Maybe its worth doing but its only for a few weeks..

actually I don't have ABS.. :/ says compatible with ABS vehicles

I can send you a center cap for £7 posted if you want. Looking at it I'd say it must have been over tightened at some point and it just gave up! New bearing is £35 of you want OEM equivalent, I bought one in motor factors which is probably not as good but needed it quick and it only cost £15. Just hammer the old one out, you'll have to remove the half shell from the spindle which is a bit of a PITA but doable (chisel and angle grinder are your friends just take it easy you don't want to cut into it! Then press the new bearing in (if you don't have a prss any garage will do this for some beer money) It's also a good time to check the ball joint, if it is goosed press a new one in at the same time. I took the opportunity and painted it all as well!

Could be an idea!

I'd like a cheap fix as I'm swapping in a month or so, so it will be running K-swap shafts instead. The thing I'm most gutted about is I'm supposed to be at JapFest next weekend..

Doesn't matter the only difference is the ABS ring which you can either remove or leave on. Get a J&R CV joint it will cost less than a half of that one! You can get a whole driveshaft from them for less than what they charge for that CV joint!

To be honest the damage is already done to the bearing, as long as it's not a long way just take your time getting there!

The ek4 cv joint won't fit the ek9 shaft, the ek9 spline(on the shaft it self) is bigger,

Been there-tried it and failed

That's very interesting that means "R" shafts might actually be different after all (even though they are interchangeable!)

Heard some mixed reviews on those j&r shafts,

If it gets you going for a month or so it's worth it I guess

Wasn't on about the bearing specifically, was on about just leaving the whole CV joint and everything lol.

Ah ok, will look elsewhere then! Will have a look on that ebay persons site.

Yeah just for a month. But then ive also been weighing up buying a cheap runaround. Now may be that time... Then just trailer the 9 to the place to K-swap. Undecided.

Aye I've read that about people who had issues but I personally know at least 3 people who used them on various cars and I used their CV joints without any issues. For the money it's hard to argue really!

I tried a old out cv joint from my 96 ek4 sir on my ek9 shaft and it was to small, obviously there is a possibility the shaft from my ek9 is not origional but it looked like it was..
Another thing I've noticed on non R shafts is the big rubber ring in the centre of the shafts, don't know why the non r shafts need it when the R shafts dont
