ok so i decided to give my engine bay a quick clean as i had an oil leak which i sorted out and wanted to clean the engine up.

i covered the altenator and distributor and took the battery out , i didnt cover the fusebox but i checked it and there was no water in it

i took off dizzy cap and there was no moisture in it, i took off leads and plugs and let them dry out , there was a bit of water in no.1 plug well but i blew it out with compressed air.

there was a little water in the map sensor plug when i unplugged it, but let that dry out.

the battery is fully charged too. what happens is when i put in the key all lights work on dash as normal etc but when i turn it it just clicks and lights on dash go off and nothing happens ??

anyone know how i would diasgnose whats wrong ....all fuses look to be ok unless i blew a main relay or somethin ? or possible some sensor is gone ??

car is a jap b16a eg9 btw

Might be an earth? you can try putting a jump lead to the negative terminal of the battery and the other end on the engine somewhere to give it a good earth? I am also having these signs on and off but not had time to diagnose it yet.

Let us know if that helps it :nice:

Double check your battery connection, mine was doing this too, the earth was loose on the battery terminal!

Im fairly sure the battery terminals are ok , I took out the battery before washing it an car started fine before that . Il try the jump lead trick tho tomoro to see .

But should the light on the dash an the actual lights not work if it was bad earth ? Il try the jump lead thing tomoro to see if it's an earth .

The hids were actin up when the keys were in te ignition before tryin to start it ..... They were on when the lights were switched off ? If they could be anthin to do with it ?

My car had the EXACT symptoms - dash would light up, you turn the key, it clicks - and nothing! There will be contact, just not a good enough contact to give you enough current to actually start the car! Take the connectors off the terminals and reconnect them, also make sure the negative is attached properly to the chassis. You said it yourself - it was working fine BEFORE you took the battery out of the car, so something clearly went wrong when it went back in.

Yeah try the earths, you can take them off and clean them up. Try the battery earth and the one near the gearbox. Exactly the same thing happened to me last summer.

Sounds like there is an earth playing with the HID's....if they came on without the headlight switch being activated it means the circuit has been completed for the power to flow through the HID's, most likely the neutral or earth for the HID's making contact with earth.....

Try the jump lead trick and defo re-check battery and earth connections are free from corrosion and strongly connected to car body.

Let us know how you get on :nice:

ok so went at it there again, charged the battery again to have it fully charged, cleaned the terminals. i removed the hid's completely just to rule it out. took off gearbox earth and main battery earth and cleaned them and put them back on.

also used the jump lead and earthed the battery.

it still wont start but theres more activity than yesterday, now its kind of trying to start but it seems like the battery is half flat and there isnt enough power to start it ?

now when i try start it makes a small attempt then seems like battery is going and the starter just repeatedly clicks??

im thinking try jump start it off another car to rule out battery ? if that doesnt work it must not be gettin a spark am i right ??

Sounds like not enough juice in the battery to turn the starter? How old is the battery?

Other than this....sounds like an auto electrician to diagnose the earths etc?? Get the deep pocks ready :p

Ya battery is old an was flat for a v long time before I charged it so maybe it's not fully charged , il try jump it off another cAr later and see .

So you don't think it's dizzy or anything ? If I jump it off a running car and earth the battery to engine properly an still doesn't start it has to be somethin other than battery or earth ya ??

check all your plugs and connections in the bay, sounds like you may have gotten some wet when you where washing your bay and now they don't have a good contact.

the fact your dash lights are going off tells me there is either a dodgy earth or the battery has not enough capacity to turn the starter and when it is attempting to turn it its draining the battery to the point it has no power for the dash lights.....

I may be wrong, but thats what i think it is. If you can jump it, can indicate the battery is not holding enough charge...maybe try someones battery that is working??

Where did you leave the battery when you had it out of the car to wash/charge it, because if you leave a battery on concrete it drains it. More than likely that!

It wont drain it, its not earthing it at all so it physically cant drain it. If anything its cooling it which can cause it to not work at its optimum, by this reducing the output and charging ability of the battery. Same idea as starting a car when its cold/winter.....

Got it sorted lads thanks for all te help . It was the battery in the end , looks like I need a new one . I think the hids initially were playin with an earth somewhere so removed em completely an jumped it off another car an started no bother .
