Coilovers or Springs.

hey guys,
now I KNOW this has been asked but I searched on google and on the forum search bar and nothing came up =/

I don't know what my car has on it at the moment, im sure it's not factory springs since they're red and lowered haha
But my mate told me to put coilovers on my baby, problem is .... I don't know what coilovers do!!
Can anyone inform me as im still learning slowly?
