hi is it true that the Dseries engines are best for turboing? was just wondering as ive been doing a vtec mini project for ages now and its time to choose the engine lol. after about 200fwhp low boost and 300+ high boost. im under the impression i can get that kinda power and still have it as an everyday runner no problem? or wud a b16 be better? cheers.

The D-series is best for BUDGET turbo'ing.

Given that you can find most worn D16s for around free to $100.00, they can be fun and inexpensive motors to build.

Granted after you refresh things to the point where the motor is healthy again - a project like this can nickle and dime you to death.

Count on spending at least $1,500usd on machining, internals, water pump, oil pump, timing belt, t-belt tensioner, seals, gaskets, coolant, homemade fabrication and a junkyard turbo.

All said and done, it wouldn't be unusual to spend $3k or so to get everything in order with regards to fueling, drivetrain, engine management and perhaps most importantly tuning.

search google for fjt distributors. Their prices are great for rebuild/turbo internal packages. It'll get you started if you're seriously considering this build. Normally, if you kept things under 220whp, you could likely get away with stock internals, but since you said 300whp... unless you have a really good tuner and a guardian angel, I would advise against trying this.

Weak part of the d series is the rods. Get some forged rods and low comp pistons. Crank will hold up fine for 300hp although might be a good idea to use some ACL bearings. ARP headstuds are recommended. Go for a good turbo kit and not any ebay stuff!!

cheers guys.

nah i defo wna build it up properly. and theres no rush so 3k budget is defo available. its a long term project im in no hurry to complete it so wna use the good parts even if it means it takes longer to get them all 2geva.

so if i found a d16engine, get some forged internals, what else exactly would i need for a totally solid reliable 300+bhp.

also what turbo kit to use? it dnt matter bout more power, 300-350 would be on high boost setting for drag (id have a low boost of round 200area)...as dnt 4get were talking bout a classic mini here lol.

I've Been told the d-series willl produce more torque than the B-series

Well the D16 has a longer stroke than the B16 therefore that is entirely possible. However you would not see more horsepower since it cannot rev as high nor flow air as well as the B16

ile be honest guys im rly blown away by sum of the figures ppl r claiming on stock engines...surely it cnt hold out for long tho? i mean 250whp ona stock d16?? this is rly totally rewriting everything i thought i knew about tuning lol

I used to think the same that stock engine's could not make good power or even last for that matter when running a turbo unless bottom end was built using low compression forged internals but Blinx on here opened my eyes to what the guys have been doing in the states for a long time. Stock engine's with turbo kits making good power and not blowing up. Tuning seem's to be the key in all of this, making it safe.

Clinchys had his car running this for over a year now and he's not a slow driver either, still hasn't had the slightest hint of a problem, he said the key is to tune it regularly and keep it serviced!
